There is a interesting story here, and in the very last part themes that I find interesting to explore. However, the 'love' story between a free man and an enslaved woman is grotesque to me, and really sours the whole book. I feel we are somehow meant to feel sorry for him for 'losing her' when she is sold to someone else before he can buy her, but I feel enraged on her behalf for the objectification of someone who it is clear even from the short glimpses we get of her is an intelligent woman with a strong mind and spirit. I would have been very interested in hearing her story.

Minor: Slavery, War
Wow. This book has it all.
There is something about this novel that is so enchanting. So often stories are of world saving events, saving the country, etc. etc.. This, by comparison, is relatively low stakes, but to the players in it, it means everything.
This book is just brilliant. In every sense of the word. I cannot think of a single thing I would change about it, except being able to read it for the first time again.
Its a story about friendship, love, war, loss, and gain. About how with true drive, true purpose, there is nothing that can't be done. And also about how even with those, it can still sometimes go to complete shit, and that's ok too.
I could drone on and on about the magnificence of this book. It's endlessly quotable, extremely readable, and completely hilarious, but I will stop myself and just say this; buy the book and read it. It is by far and away the best thing I have read this year. Maybe ever.

A brilliant book that was funny, disturbing, and charming all at the same time. I loved it and can't wait to see what this author writes next.

412 BC Syracuse. Captured Athenians, indifferent sometimes cruel low-born Syracusans. Then art, theatre, blurring lines between what everybody is, was, can be, could have been. And what is valuable. I found it an amazing, brilliant read.
