So, you know that voice inside your head? Does it narrate your movements or is it more of a background projector of your thoughts? The book Chatter by Ethan Kross takes a look at this inner voice and makes suggestions as to how to better make it work for you. This book talks about the tricks we can play on our brains with things like rituals and placebos, and the ways we can talk to ourselves to stop upsetting thoughts from taking over. I wanted to hear more about different types of inner voices but this was very interesting nonetheless.

Really interesting concept about our inner monologue and how we can calm it down by looking at the big picture either by our environment or even by saying our names in our heads. I thought it was quite informative about our inner voice.

This was such an incredible book, and I hope as many people as possible pick up a copy. Who among us doesn't struggle with the chatter of our inner voice? Whether it's our inner critic, or our anxiety filling us with fear, or the voice of crippling depression, it's part of the human condition. Fortunately, Ethan Kross has dedicated most of his life to researching that voice in our head and what we can do about it. This book has the perfect blend of neuroscience, psychology, and storytelling, which makes it accessible to a wide range of readers.
The book starts out by helping us to understand why we developed our inner voice through the lens of evolutionary psychology. Then, we learn about its pros and cons, and I especially enjoyed a chapter Kross added about how we often don't understand how social support works. While we all need a support system, there's a right way and a wrong way to support someone or receive support, and many people don't realize this. Best of all, this book has a ton of strategies people can use that are rooted in scientific evidence to work with our inner voice and lead better lives.
2nd read:
I’ve been struggling a bit with my anxiety and depression lately, and when this happens, I ruminate like crazy. So, I decided it was a great time to read this book from Ethan Kross for the second time for some reminders about how to harness this inner voice. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as much as I did the first time, and it really helped me embrace that inner voice rather than trying to resist it. This is a fantastic book, and the tools are backed by research, so I highly recommend it to anyone who struggles with that voice in our head.

Unless you want to learn about specific examples/studies, the information in the entire book is all summed up within the "tools" chapter. Otherwise, I think the writing was easy to read.

This book provides some practical guidance on how to work with the chatter that goes on inside of your head, especially when it overwhelms you and how to work with it and not against it.
