Terrific, accessible overview of why we talk to ourselves, and how to re-frame self-talk in moments of crisis or stress.
Of course, I always think, when reading these kinds of books, that it all sounds very doable and straightforward, but remembering and employing these methods in the moment is another matter entirely.
Even so, it was highly elucidating to hear Kross' findings and suggestions, many of which I've employed in the past - either instinctively or by way of my meditation practice. (For example, zooming out to the big picture, thinking about how you would speak to and advise a friend in the situation, etc.) My hope is that reading and understanding why these particular approaches are effective will help to keep them in mind.

As a person who ruminates a LOT, I’ve found this book super helpful and it gives me hope. Many of the tools discussed are ones I’ve already heard of through therapy, friends, and other self help books, but I like the way Kross backed each of these up with studies and simple explanations. Kross also made his Chatter Toolbox available online, cleanly summarized here (or just Google “chatter toolbox”): https://www.ethankross.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/14/2021/02/Chatter-Toolbox-by-Ethan-Kross.pdf

It’s fine. Does not contain any new ideas.

The message in this book is really good, but gets a little redundant after a while. As a big advocate of therapy, I also think a lot of what was discussed here is taught in therapy. I do think it’d be a worthwhile read for someone who’s seeking methods to combat your inner voice.

This was great. Breaking down the why behind self talk helps to tame it. It’s not about shutting down the self talk. The takeaway is how to tame and refocus the self talk to your own benefit.
