Read for my WGSS Literature by Women of Color class. This was very slow, even meandering at times, and there was no “big” moment of fast, engaging action even by the end of the novel, yet I was captivated by Allende’s writing style and the particular diction she used (or the English translator used). Loved how much I learned about the Gold Rush in San Francisco that happened in the late 1840s. I read most of this via kindle unlimited but I listened to almost a third of the audiobook during the middle of the book lol.

I have had this book on my shelf for many years  I finally decided to read it and what a surprise. It is so good! I was not expecting such an adventure. Eliza goes on a journey to America to find her lover who left her in Chile to be part of the California gold rush craze. And it was crazy!  The author does a fantastic job describing what it was like in 1850s San Francisco with the gold rush going on. The characters are all so well written and the plot kept my interest for all 400 pages. The ending was abrupt though. There were a few loose ends….

Loved the historical context of the gold rush as experienced by a Chilean immigrant of British descent.

Halfway through the book I had no idea where it was going and never expected the ending, but the story and writing is so good it doesn’t really matter. I don’t mind the narrator of this audiobook but I did prefer listening to the house of the spirits.
