I have to admit when I picked this up at a used book store it was on my list and towards the bottom. But I was bored. It took me a few days to pick it up and when I did i was surprised. The male character is kinda boring and I felt myself flipping through the scenes describing his blood red lips and pale skin and dark hair. But the main character had some depth and some surprises. Any book that requires me to delve into my knowledge of ancient lore is fun and they used a not main stream one! The ending was surprising and any book that has the main character becoming attached not only to the romantic opposite but other characters holds my interest.

This didn’t disappoint! The 2nd time reading it and still holds up. I love Ari, especially her relationship with violet.

This story was drenched in setting and mythology, which I loved. Ari was a very likable and strong protagonist, and although the rest of the cast was a bit more subpar, they were decent enough for a first book. Plenty of action, and twists and turns.

I do, of course, have a few negative comments. For one, we are faced with yet another disappointing romance: Ari and Sebastian, who barely know each other and yet have that inexplicable "connection" (note: I am saying that in a mocking manner) make out before 100 pages are out. Seriously, what.

Secondly, although I liked the mythology aspects of the story, I felt like Athena was acting very . . . well, ungoddess-like. She wasn't regal or powerful; she just seemed like a spoiled brat with no real motivation to me. What a disappointing antagonist.

Despite its flaws, though, I enjoyed this book and it was certainly a page-turner.

This book has (along with Sherrilyn Kenyon's books) made me want to go to New Orleans. The setting is semi-destroyed New Orleans made a great background for the story, which had me hooked. My only issue is that the book was very short, and since it seems like there's going to be a second one, I feel like more could have been put in this volume. It's beginning to annoy me how people keep writing series that are like 10 books long, but each book is really short... Other than that complain though, I really liked it.

Mindblowing! That is the one word that comes to my mind after reading Darkness Becomes Her. I love the twists and turns this book takes you. You can't help but fall in love with Ari and feel her pain as she goes through this journey to discorver who and what she is. I can not wait to read the sequel!

First in trilogy set in paranormal world with Ari cursed to be Medusa on her 21st birthday (talk about a bad hair day!!!) and her fight with the wicked and evil Athena. Set it New Orleans add a hot half vampire and half witch boy and you have a unique blend of paranormal and mythology. Heavy on the adult language!!!

Kelly Keaton’s debut novel, Darkness Becomes Her was such a wonderful surprise. Everything about this exciting story is unbelievably creative and interesting. Personally, I have always loved the old Greek Myths and stories featuring them have always caught my interest.

In today’s young adult market many of the paranormal themes are quickly becoming overdone. First it was vampires, then it was werewolves and angels and 2011 seems to be the year of sirens. Greek mythology is a relatively uncharted territory (besides the Percy Jackson series), which allows Keaton to craft a truly unique story. However, she doesn’t just stick with the Greek myths; Darkness Becomes Her is sort the “melting pot” of paranormal characters. There are so many different types of creatures within this book, you honestly don’t know what you are going to find next.

Take for instance, the main character of Ari. Ari has always known she is different and the book begins with her trying to find some answers. She was given up for adoption at the age of four and therefore has no clue about what exactly makes her the way she is. In fact, the reader (as well as Ari) is clueless when it comes to her heritage for the majority of the book. I don’t want to give anything away, but let me say this – Keaton certainly hit a homerun with this one. I was completely thrown off guard with the answer, I never saw it coming. But, I cannot wait to see where the story goes now that Ari knows her true identity. I have a feeling it is going to be awesome.

I am especially interested to see how her pending romance with the ultra attractive Sebastian develops from here. Sebastian has rather interesting heritage as well (no, I’m not giving it away!), and I think that their relationship is going to be rather exciting. It certainly will be unique!

Like I said before, there is an array of different paranormal/supernatural creatures featured in this book. Ari comes across vampires, harpies, witches, warlocks, shifters, demigods, voodoo priests and a few others that haven’t exactly been identified yet. All of these creatures take solace in New 2 – the city that arose from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

In this slightly futuristic story (about 15 years ahead) New Orleans has become sort of a sanctuary from the outside world. The land was purchased from the United States and became a self-sufficient area for a variety of outsiders. This setup gives the book a very distinctive feel – it is almost like a dystopian paranormal/supernatural adventure. I really don’t know how to describe it adequately; just that it is incredibly unique and extremely intriguing.

Darkness Becomes Her was a phenomenal start to a new young adult series. The story is full of action, adventure, suspense and excitement. The plot is packed with surprises - different creatures and monsters greet you around every corner. Honestly, Keaton threw in everything but the kitchen sink into this incredibly debut. I am looking forward to continuing the series and seeing what becomes of Ari and her band of misfits.

Darkness Becomes Her is Harry Potter meets Twilight meets Perct Jackson. And yes, I'm perfectly aware of how strange that sounds, but Kelly Keaton makes it work.

I really want to learn more about Henry, Dub and Crank. They were pretty minor characters so it'll be nice to hear more about them in the next book.

I can't believe how outraged I was when Athena took Violet. I wanted to jump in the book and smack the crap out of her!
