This author sure loves the air of melancholy for her protagonists.
As with Imperial Uncle this one didn’t grab me until after 50% in. I was a little bereft by the ending - what happened to the fox?? - but overall found it more satisfying than Uncles.

This was somehow extremely long-winded for how short the novel was. It's not hard to follow, but I didn't find it had almost any emotional impact on me. It's also first person and I never got used to it.
Song Yao: "Hengwen, would you still love me if I was a worm cockroach?".
The ending was kind of funny, I feel likeHengwen should have chosen the fox though.
Tianshu had the hardest time of anyone in this book

The author just loves to play with your emotions and keeps your mind reeling over who the main CP are throughout the novel. I mean it wasn't bad per se; I loved the plot, the mystery and the way fate intertwined them to reach the present. But, it gets draggy in the middle. The starting and ending were smooth sailing but it's the in between that really irked me. I was confused most of the time. I desperately wanted to love this one, cause the comedy part was pure GOLD. There's just something missing, maybe it's the characters?!!! I did feel that the romance was too fast, there wasn't much development except for love at first sight which wasn't unrealistic but it didn't satisfy me. I only found the last few chapters entertaining cause a lot unfolds there. But that didn't help douse my annoyance even a bit. I hoped there'd be more extra chapters but sadly there weren't :'(
This is my biggest pet peeve when books with such amazing premises fail to deliver what's promised or maybe that's just me. I feel so disappointed cause this story had so much potential but it became a mess overall. As for Song Yao, he deserves thousand hugs (my poor child, I feel you) & I only gave it 2.5 stars cause of the humour.

I was a bit nervous about starting this because of mixed reviews and it being the first novel I've read from this author, but I loved it!!!
There were honestly so many twists and turns that I wasn't expecting. I literally gasped at some parts and the ending had me cryinggggg 😭🙌(Never thought I would be crying over a cockroach, but here we are...)
I also loved some of the deeper questions the story brought up about fate and personal choices in the face of "Heaven's plan" for your life. I am generally not a fan of stories with "fated mates" andthis book was a pleasant subversion of that with Song Yao and Hengwen choosing to make their own destiny together. It was both romantic and thought-provoking.
