The first volume of black science is a frenetic take on the dimension sliders concept. Wonderfully imaginative and well executed art combined with a complex story with minimum exposition.

This is a stunning graphic novel. The main character, Grant McCay, is largely unlikable and seemingly pessimistic. But he's also incredibly remorseful and protective of his children. This first arc had such tender moments of self-sacrifice from more than one character... It gave this fast-paced, action-packed Sci-Fi story some incredible depth and tenderness.

When McCay and his science team finish developing a pillar they've spent a decade working on, Grant brings his children by for a viewing of the dimension-hopping portal device.  But someone has sabotaged the unit and McCay, his children, his unsuspecting team, and their grumpy, mistrusting overseer, Kadir, are all pulled into the pillar and spit out in another incredibly dangerous dimension. Stop after stop, the team barely stays alive, barely stays together, but is ultimately rebuilt stronger, if not more hardened, with each new encounter.

The art and coloring are absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best, most inventive story panels and layouts I've seen in someetime. This was an exciting story with unpredictable twists I'm still thinking about. It's wild to me that this story has been out for as long as it has and is still somewhat of an undiscovered gem. I loved the whole ride and can't wait to start the next volume.

An effective adventure story with nice art. The characters are rather hostile, which makes them somewhat difficult to relate to.

"Black Science" is about a group of scientists that build a machine that opens pathways between parallel dimensions. Some places are similar to our own and others are fantastically different. Due to an accident or failure the "Pillar" breaks during the first jump and the scientists, called "Dimensionauts" can't get home and the portal opens and closes at different intervals. If you are not at the "Pillar" when it jumps, you get left behind.

This is one of those stories that really grows and gets better as it goes along. I was a bit unsure about it in the beginning. It didn't quite reel me in from the start but as I kept going I found myself more invested in the characters and the overarching story. By the end I finally felt I had a sense of where things were going and I feel compelled to pick up the next volume. The story has a bit of a Sliders/Quantum Leap vibe going for it but I really appreciate the tension between the "Dimensionauts" team as well as the reveal in the last chapter of this volume with regards to the nature of the multiverse through which the explorers are traveling.

Definitely worth checking int

I had been putting off reading Black Science for years after a friend recommended it. I did try starting it a year ago and stopped after a few pages—no idea why other than I just wasn’t in the mood. Read it in one sitting today, and wow! I’m going to have to read the rest of the series ASAP.
