This book is full of King's ideas about the horror culture in its entirety. It's almost perfect. Almost, because this book was written in the 80s' and is a bit outdated now. I felt out of place reading it, mostly because I did not grow up in the era that King writes this book in and cannot relate to many of the things that he discusses in the book. I haven't seen the TV shows he talks about, growing up I didn't watch most of the films he talks about. I would love an updated version of this book, discussing about the genre from the 90s' to the present.
Nevertheless, it was an enjoyable book and it was amusing to take a peek at what goes on in the mind of one of my favourite writers. I wouldn't recommend this for everyone though. I'd recommend it to the fans of horror, the dreamers, the weirdos.

As one of those students in the class so mentioned in the book, I can attest to the worth of the material covered. King examines the seminal works of horror and gives numerous examples of books, television shows, and movies that use horror. He explores what it means to him, and to the world at large. He details different horror archetypes and what they mean. He covers writers whose works you should know.
This is a book that gives a thorough answer to those who ask "Why does he write that stuff?"

Enjoyable but not really for me. With non fiction I much prefer in a visual media or as a podcast where the information is provided in a more conversational manner.
Loved the introduction, but the rest of it is King raving/ranting about various horror fiction pre-1980s... which is exactly what everyone that picked up this book signed up for.
