Very in-depth, but it made my zombie paranoia almost worse than it already is. (I expect it to happen one day, and so far my plans are too basic: either to hole up with my parents and their guns in their country home, or commit suicide). The weapons guide was nice, but as I probably won't really buy a katana, or be worth anything with one, I will have to resort to blunt objects around the house until I get to my dad's guns, which I don't even know how to use.
Some of the tips were useful (filling the bathtub with water right away in case the pipes are turned off) but some were just way above my ability.

3.5 Stars I think!
I now feel that I am in possession of all the info I need for dealing with any stage of a Zombie attach... wonderful!

A chronology of zombie sightings and attacks throughout history. I have not read World War Z or any of Brooks’ other Zombie books, so I learned a great deal.
fast-paced
This book is well suited to strategy if not tongue in cheek humor.
Well written, organized and quiet frankly, almost believable. The part that recounts the zombie attacks through history was especially interesting. Surprisingly pleased by how much I enjoyed this book.
It gives me a fuzzy feeling that so many people have now read this book that you can always find someone at a party who knows what you're talking about when you ask about their zombie contingency plan.
The title says it all: this is a complete, comprehensive guide to surviving the zombie apocalypse. It explores zombie preparation on a level that very few have dared to dream of. If you're serious about your survival, this is the book for you.
This reads like a textbook rather than a fictional book with helpful bullet pointed lists and illustrations. The "historical" accounts of zombies at the conclusion of the book really tie the entire thing together. This is an excellent (unintentional...?) companion book to World War Z. I highly recommend reading them together. In fact, this is an excellent companion book to anything about zombies.
I've noticed that a lot of people I know who have read this book disagree about whether it should be categorized as humor or horror. Honestly, the book is such a complete and wonderful mixture of both that it's hard to say. If nothing else, this survival guide really makes readers hyper aware of the shortcomings of their homes in the face of disaster...

This started out really promising. Got a bit redundant.
Pretty much 85% of us have zero shot of survival

The Zombie Survival Guide. Pretty Sweet. I picked it up to satisfy a craving for World War Z (Brooks' second zombie book, published after ZSG), which I read last year. Not surprisingly, Zombie Survial Guide paled in comparison. Thinking back, most of the books I read in 2010 - fiction and non-fiction of all genres and styles and topics - paled in comparison to World War Z. That book is a tour de force. But we all know that and are to discuss The Zombie Survival Guide...not WWZ (but seriously...if you haven't read it...Go. Read. It. Now.)
So Max Brooks, in this book of how to survive in the world of the walking dead, solidifies the zombie mythology into fact, science, and history. He claims that the urban legends of zombie attacks we all know and love are based on actual events and our collective world history is permeated with similar stories that are tied to well known and obscure historical events. Brooks provides a chronological recounting of these anecdotes which take up the last 75 pages or so. I found this the most compelling portion of the book.
The first 175 pages consist of clearly defining what real zombies are (and are not), how they differ from the voodoo zombies and hollywood zombies. Brooks claims that the walking dead are humans who have been inflected by the virus Solanum, die from the virus, and reanimate as human-hungry ghouls. Brooks then carefully describes how to survive various levels of outbreak based on their severity, the tools and supplies you will need, how to protect your home, survive while on the run, and how to start a new life should the worst-case scenario become reality.
Interestingly, The Zombie Survival Guide is categorized as a "humor" book. While yes, the topic is absurd when taken literally, the seriousness with which Brooks writes and discusses survival in a collapsing/imploding contemporary society allows the reader to easily imagine similar scenes playing out in the not too distant future. Scarcity of fossil fuels, food, water, or an unstoppable biological plague and I think the world may look very similar to the one Brooks describes.
So four stars. The how-to stuff got a little dry, but couldn't even ruin this book for me. It is apocalyptic fodder. And its extremely well done.
