Another amazing non-fiction book that will make you laugh while educating you!

This is one of the worst books I’ve ever read. Hear me out? This book wasn’t written for me (that’s okay!) but I think I just don’t like ~comedy~ books. The entire book read like a looooong instagram post or even a shitty podcast rather than a book… maybe my standards for what a ~book~ is are too serious?
I physically gagged during the chapter in which the author goes in depth about shitting herself in front of her boyfriend during covid quarantine. Then she writes an entire paragraph about his asscrack. Man, vulgarity is just not for me (which skews my perception of this book entirely but it’s just my POV).
It was hard to take the author’s very serious takes on political and social issues amid clunky and awkwardly chunked rants about the most useless nonsense, like how she hates dogs and how everyone should wear matching underwear sets everyday. So bizarre.
I genuinely don’t think that anyone edited this book, but on the bright side, I’m convinced that I could easily write a book after reading this— it was published by Penguin Randomhouse for pete’s sake! I speed this audiobook way tf up because I wanted it to be OVER. There was no thesis, no theme; just countless blurbs of random opinions and jokes that were based around shortening words and adding side comments ( i.e. obligation to “obligash”, alliteration to “alliterash”). Also she kept yelling during the audiobook and shouting “hashtag!”.

This book made me laugh out loud. In a time when I needed it most, Robinson was able to make me smile more than anything. Now, I will say, this book covers some heavy topics! But the writing intertwined with humor still made it educational.

From a format perspective, I started reading the physical copy but quickly learned it’s very conversational. I switched over to the audiobook (shoutout library) and it made this experience that much more enjoyable. If this book interests you and you’re able, I highly recommend going the audiobook route!

I know it can be hit or miss with comedians, but PLEASE DON’T SIT ON MY BED IN YOUR OUTSIDE CLOTHES was an absolute hit. And since Robinson already used this title, I can no longer use it for my memoir ;)

I definitely plan on visiting her backlist books here soon!

#93/2021

I listened to this book on Audible, narrated by the author who does a great job with the narration. I wasn't super familiar with Phoebe Robinson when I first started this book but her compilation of essays is funny, deeply relatable, quirky and even educational. I appreciate Phoebe's open and honest demeanor, which made listening to the book seem like two friends just hanging out. Overall, it was a good, easy read.

In her latest collection of essays, Phoebe Robinson hilariously reflects on the pandemic, her relationship, race, hair, travel, business, Black excellence, and more. Her essays are full of thoughtful insights about the past few years in America and in her own life, as well as hilarious pop culture references, footnotes, and a love for U2 that is unmatched. Robinson is refreshingly honest and laugh out loud hilarious throughout the series of essays.

I enjoy books by comedians. While I wasn't that familiar with Phoebe Robinson, I picked up this book as a light read between heavier novels. Her essay style is a bit different than other comedy books, and some were more intense than others, but all had her distinct voice. I could have done without the truncated works and AKAs, because while listening on audiobook, it just interrupted the flow. Otherwise, it was a nice breather between novels, and I felt like I got to know the author and her boyfriend.
