Warning: if you read this book you'll probably want to buy a tarot deck and move to a small town. You'll also want to climb Hank like a tree because God, I mean Eliza MacArthur, knew what she was doing when she wrote those wood chopping scenes for us thirsty readers. Hank is a beautiful soul, super protective, and I just wanted to make all of his troubles go away.

I really enjoyed this book. I loved the mystery and paranormal elements, the suspense and plot of Esther running from something in her past...The prose was so lovely and super impressive for a debut, and this did a good job of setting us up for future books which I will be excited to read. I will admit the conflict that brought Esther to Hank's small town wrapped up a bit too easily and it seemed like it could have been avoided. I would have liked more drama at this point, though it didn't hinder my enjoyment of the story and this is just an afterthought. For me the cozy vibes and serious pining eclipsed this.

Soft Flannel Hank is out April 10th
Thanks to the author for the ARC!

The rave reviews were right - this is a good one! I wanted to cuddle Hank and make his problems go away, and Esther was both soft and strong in all the right ways. I did think the tension and drama that had been building all along got resolved a little too easily, but otherwise I really enjoyed all of it. The secondary characters were engaging, too, and I’m ready to read more about Jory!

I mean, I adored this book, but it is also 100% Charlie Swan from [b:Twilight|41865|Twilight (The Twilight Saga, #1)|Stephenie Meyer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1361039443l/41865._SY75_.jpg|3212258] fanfiction. Still a beautiful, angsty romance with some of the best writing and most interesting magical elements. I will definitely will be looking forward to any future books by this author.

Good elements but that “climax” was so disappointing

EDIT: Dropped it from a 3 to a 2 because it’s been days and I’m still actively mad about it

I think I must be entering my 'men-with-beards-that-live-in-the-woods' phase because that was pretty much my sole reason for picking this book up. I wanted romance with a rugged male main character. I'm not sure that is quite what I got, but I'm not mad about it.

Hank is the most sensitive MMC I think I've ever read. He is in therapy. He journals. He is on a journey of self discovery and healing. I was not expecting any of this. He also wears flannel shirts and chops wood to help him regulate his emotions, which was more in keeping with my expectations. Esther on the other hand is much less clear a character - she is a tarot reading witch on the run, but she never really grows as the story progresses and I never really connected with her as a character. This may be because the miscommunication trope was strong in her and I'm just not there for it. Her behaviour was annoying and I felt Hank could do better.

This story was clearly setting up a series of supernatural romances, with several other love pairings introduced. I think I'll give the next one a try - I enjoyed this book even if I did want to give Esther a smack multiple times. Theses more to Hank that we have yet to discover, which I'm interested in as well. More than anything I was impressed with how well the broken, sensitive Hank was written and the journey we went on with him and I'm interested to see how MacArthur deals with this for her other characters.

✨Mental Health Rep
✨Suspense
✨Broken Hero
✨A wee bit supernatural

Thoughts: This is the week where I step out of my normal reading and fall into new worlds to love. “Soft Flannel Hank” was the coziest, sweetest, horniest book about two somewhat broken people who find their way to each other. AND it has supernatural elements (Esther’s a witch, there are vampires) that was done so naturally and well, that I may be a convert.

I have so much love for Hank. The man was going through it - in a rut since his wife and daughter left, depressed since he left his police job. He was a large hunky lumberjack with the softest soul. I LOVED him so much and just want to wrap him up in a tight hug. It remains one of my favorite things to read about imperfect men, going through things, trying to put themselves back together in healthy ways. There was therapy and communication and Hank fell so hard, so fast for Esther with no pretense. The juxtaposition of him being so rough on the outside and so delicate on the inside made my heart so happy.

Esther was a fantastic heroine. Strong, independent, tough to crack but loving, committed, and all-in on Hank once she allowed herself to be. She was scared, on the run, trying to find some stability and the tension built up in such a way that I felt everything she felt. I loved that she was vulnerable despite her powers, strong and sure of herself but still craving that stability she had been missing.

The pacing was so good, building just the right amount of suspense with a plot that had action and so much character development. There were strong male friendships, and beautiful grief depicted. And the spice was FANTASTIC. Hank & Esther were fire in every sense of the word.

Can’t wait for the next one!

Ok so there were some challenges for me. One being that it all basically took place in about three weeks and a LOT happened. Everyone needs therapy. Not just Hank lol
That being said, I was truly surprised at the twist. It made me laugh and I can’t wait to read more about everyone as the series goes on.
