overall, i really enjoyed this book and Vivienne and Carter and just everything about their growth as people and as lovers. the cameos from previous and future books (i read all the others before this one) were amazing, especially Eddie (i love him down even though Nixon is my favorite from this series).

Great Read

This book was great. Raw and beautiful. I don’t cry often in books but I did when I read this one.

I love this couple together but there was soooo much lack of communication and it irked my soul.
If you can get on stage and recite a poem about her, you can tell her how you feel my boy

Glad I tried another book in the series! Still unclear on the baby obsession with the couples in this series, but at least there weren't multiple accidental and yet somehow totally wanted pregnancies, so definitely an improvement!

Loved Viv and Carter both -- they made me absolutely cry, each of their individual baggage was sad, but well handled, and cathartic to read these hard conversations without things ending tied up in a pretty unrealistic bow.

Except the romance, obviously that ended happily ;)

In book 2 we meet Vivian and Carter. Vivian, is the owner of the chocolate shop and Carter owns the barbershop. Vivian is one that loves hard. She wears her emotions on her shoulder. All she wants is to be loved back like she loves.

Carter, the man who doesn't want to be in a serious relationship is knocked off his square with Vivian. He really doesn't know how to express himself when it comes to relationships.

I enjoyed reading about their relationship. I enjoyed reading book 2. I will continue to read the series. I like how each book focuses on different business owners in the neighborhood.

Thus far this series is really baby heavy and it’s driving me a bit nuts. I’m working through CCJ’s catalogue in publishing/series order and seeing the back to back repetitive beats makes it harder to isolate what I enjoyed about each couple at times.

That said, the downfall of this book for me was the timing of Carter’s reveal of his baggage. By the time the conflict between the two comes up, it feels callous to Viv and as the reader, I’m not enthused with either of them for continuing to push forward.

I’m just not a fan of romances revolving around this kind of dynamic, especially when there isn’t a whole lot of groveling in the picture.

Continuing with the series but seriously concerned they’ll all be like this.

Not Relationship Goals

After reading the first book in this series, I had little interest in a book about Carter and Vivienne. I didn’t find either of their characters to be particularly interesting or likable. Diving into their story revealed that their both saddled with baggage from strained relationships with their parents. That dysfunction made them seem perfect for each other. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a warm and fuzzy match. I’m generally turned off by stories that romanticize a woman fixing/healing a damaged man. On a brighter note, I enjoyed catching up with the other residents of Mahogany Heights.
