Interesting guy, love memoirs written as short stories rather than overarching “plot.”

Got halfway through the book thinking half his life was gone and then he was like “I was 24 at the time” and I laughed out loud.

I wish I had something more profound to say about it though. I read this on a whim, missing Anthony's wonder for the world. and unflinchingly honest way of speaking about it. The way he was and is, so painfully human.
This book is that. Not so much about travel, but his career and life in the industry. In kitchens, the gritty awfulness of it at times, sure. But also why he stayed. I don't know how to review this one, but I want to read more by him. So maybe that's enough.

Hilarious, eye opening and immensely enjoyable. Bourdain perfectly summarizes a certain kind of lifestyle while simultaneously characterizing the way I personally think and act to an extent I have rarely encountered. This book means a whole lot to me.

Anthony Bourdain is a great writer, and I loved listening to him in 'Parts Unknown'. However, that Bourdain is not the Bourdain who wrote this book.

Instead of the sage empath that he was in the twilight of his life, here he is a slef-proclaimed shithead. A type of hedonistic tumbleweed drifting from one kitchen to the next. I can understand why someone would find his raunchy, debaucherous tales insightful. However, I think my own exposure to being a dickhead kitchen staff doing drugs and sleeping around between kitchen jobs just eliminated any mystique that mightve been appealing.

I do still love Bourdain, just not this Bourdain.
