As someone who grew up in his dad’s many (all doomed) restaurants, and who has worked inside a chaotic italian joint in one of london’s poshest streets, this was a joy to read.
I see some reviews saying it doesn’t age well with all the offensive remarks. I regret to inform you that it does, it is still very much exactly like that, and Bourdain does a great job on exposing it, and denouncing it to a certain extent.
It’s fun, it’s real, and it is in fact, for those who know the restaurant industry.

I liked the story and I like how raw AB is in terms of content and not pulling punches when he writes, I just didn’t like the WAY he writes. I’ve never liked styles that are whimsical and verbose and that try to evoke meaning from seemingly meaningless or mundane things. Example: “i became a thrill seeking, pleasure hungry sensualist” when talking about having oysters for the first time. I know that assigning meaning and emotion to humdrum is important for appreciating life and that my take, at face value, is probably the antithesis of what it means to be a good writer, but I don’t think that he quite mastered what it was to tell me a story that I could experience. I got the story - I LIKED the story… but I didn’t feel it. I felt like I was watching him try to explain how he felt the story and the whole time I was trying not to think about what I wanted for dinner.
