i listened to the audiobook! bourdian is punchy and smart and funny and clearly, obsessively devoted to food. parts of the book have aged poorly; bourdain's careful, humanizing, and delighted portrayal of his time in japan, for example, contrasts heavily with the shitty ventriloquy he performs for nonwhite friends, coworkers, and acquaintances, and in the ways he talks about food failing to originate anywhere other than france or italy. *EDIT : ok i decided i didn't really like most of my review. but what i will say is that i chiffonaded parsley for the 1st time after reading this book -- sprinkled it over a rich ricotta lasagna that evening & then my partner used the dregs in our scrambled eggs the next morning. utterly divine. sincerely did not realize parsley could be so transcendently edible. thanks tony

Absolutely amazing book. I wasn’t sure about it, not really a memoir person, but I loved it. Had me misty eyed at the end
