Reread to Start the sequel, and because Edie's journey is SO satisfying and there was so much work to do there, I still think this ended appropriately. I trust McFarlane though, and look forward to diving right in to You Belong With Me
I was fully invested in Edie's life. This one wasn't as lol funny, but I did adore her friends again, although the mean girl/bullying not was less than convincing in some ways, right on in others.
Anyway. Love her writing and being in on the heroine's journeys.

Another Mhairi McFarlane with so much potential but it ended up being disappointing, sigh.
After facing the fallout from a "cheating" scandal at work, Edie sent to her hometown to work on a biography for an up and coming actor, Elliot. And while trying to get into a working relationship with the actor, she also deals with the rather brutal fallout from her office mates and tries to patch up her estranged relationship with her father and sister so that they can finally come together as a family that they long lost when her mother died when Edie was still in school and also try to fall back in love with the town she was once in a haste to get out of.
While all of this obviously sounds heavy and gut wrenching, I found the emotions to be rather lacking. The dialogues were too much and the British references were heavy handed and not relatable to someone who’s clearly not British.
And while I love how Mhairi always balances outs the relationship with all the life stuff, here neither of them were given enough time to develop and we just had scenes upon scenes of people talking and it getting nowhere.
One thing I did love is Edie finally getting close to her family and them hashing everything out.
Also I do know people hate the ending, but I personally liked that it had a cheeky open ending (which is easy for me to say because I have already started the sequel).
The relationship felt so raw and underdeveloped that I have no opinion on them as a couple and that’s such a shame.
I have really really loved Mhairi’s other works, but this name Between us have left me feeling apprehensive about her and maybe the sequel will be a saving grace for her (atleast I hope it will be).
TW : suicide, death of a parent, alcoholism, death on page, depression, grief, trolling, cheating and divorce, child neglect.

That was a lot of build up for a slightly unsatisfactory ending.
My heart! Mhairi McFarlane does it again. I really really loved this book - it was greatly written and it made me laugh and cry. This book is about Edie, who, after having a bad experience at a wedding - where the groom kissed her, she goes back to Nottingham (where she's originally from) to get away from her coworkers (bride & groom) and be a ghost writer for a celebrity. This book is about family, and finding your joy and discovering who you are - as opposed to the face(s) you put on for others. It is about friendships and loves and how people could be truly awful, yet incredibly wonderful at the same time. It is about loss and grief and miscommunications. The characters are incredibly written - I loved all the characters so very much. This is definitely a book for anyone who needs a truly great comfort read.
This book totally surprised me. I was expecting a light, rom-com read but am Mhairi covered some really emotional subjects in such a great way. First book to bring on a tear in a very long time but I really felt Edie’s emotions throughout the book.
Great pacing and character development. I liked all of the e side characters and they definitely helped bring the book to life.
Excited to read another Mhairi McFarlane book!

I probably would have liked these books better if I had read them in order. Book Club leaders have to do better. Ya don't start a book club with book 2 and not mention it in your advertising.
Despite that, I really love Edie and Elliot and Margot and Hannah and Nick.
