First, I did meet Kiley Reid and LOVED her. She is so thoughtful and a wonderful speaker. That talk is what prompted me to finally prioritize this read!
Now the book itself. There were so many characters. It took me a while to catch up. I honestly wish it had like three fewer characters. However, it’s set predominantly in a door room and there are SO many relationships that happen in that setting, so it makes sense.
It also took me a moment to get the storytelling flow. Once I got it, I got it. She would write in real-time for a few chapters, then dedicate a chapter to how that person ended up at that school.
The dorm is one for those who transfer or on scholarship. It was very money focused. I did hate how she wrote the girl from Alabama, spelling out her dialogue like how a stereotypical redneck would sound.
I do think she captured college girls correctly, though. How they’re in their own worlds and know how to work things to their advantage. How they’re limited to their worldview. Also the hierarchy of power with leadership positions assigned in residence life.
It was also fascinating how Agatha perceived TeenVogue. She kept writing articles for them and spying on the girls, but she didn’t think anyone would come across her articles or that anyone was reading TeenVogue.
