An awkward, book loving guy who is helping to write the biggest dictionary of all time in Japan, what's not to love? Majime loves words and books but is most definitely outside his comfort zone when it comes to interacting with people. When he's asked to join a small group of people who are creating the biggest dictionary of the Japanese language ever his life begins to change as he makes friends and further learns how impactful words can be. I was delighted to find out that there is an anime series based on the book. Three episodes in and I'm enjoying it as much as the book.

A bit of a confusing book about creating a Japanese dictionary over many years. We move from person to person involved.

I must admit that as I began reading this book I thought that maybe I was missing something in the translation. I mean this is a book about the writing of a dictionary - the boring old dictionary. However, as I read on and became enamored with the quirky, delightful people who worked in the Dictionary Editorial Department creating the newest dictionary The Great Passage I realized that this book is about the love and friendship that develops when people work with each other over a long period of time. Life is The Great Passage and if you're lucky you will find people who love the work that you also love and make each day of work worthwhile.

Pretty unique: I had a hard time connecting with the central passion around compiling a dictionary and precisely defining a multitude of words. It doesn't light my fire like it obviously does for the characters in the story. The translation I read was very impressive in being able to convey what must've been a very difficult book to translate, so that part was good. The story was touching, but also baffling in places, and I found it hard to get into. Not terrible, but not my favorite either.

Might come back for this one but right now it's kinda pissing me off. It feels too anime-y for my taste.

Delightful. It took time for me to get into the space this book occupies, but I'm glad I did.

3.5 - I really enjoyed reading this and if it wasn't for some blatantly sexist language I would have rated it higher!
