1.5 rounded up. Some parts of this book are quite good really. Bordering on great. It's certainly more consistent than a gentleman in Moscow. However, it's also exceptionally trite. The characters fall in a protracted, obvious manner. More importantly. I don't take kindly to shock value endings. At the end of it all, it's an ugly story. Nothing redeeming about it. I do therefore begrudge the time spent on it when I was needed elsewhere. An absorbing read isn't always redemptive, but shouldn't be as pointlessly tragic as this one.

I was irritated it took me 17 days to finish this book, now I’m glad, for without it, the last 17 days would have been much worse.
Thank you Towles.

The worst part of this book was that I jumped at the chance to check out the audiobook instead of waiting to hold a physical version in my hands. Probably going to buy my parents a copy when the holidays roll around, such a delight!

Mr. Towles knows how to take my heart and tear it to shreds then put it back together but keep one piece for himself. And I never know what to do with myself after the fact.

I love Amor Towles. He tells these beautiful stories that you just settle into. Even with their slow pace, nothing is wasted. His characterization is flawless.

I do feel like I need to process the ending. I would have loved this as a book club title!
