Like a Gone with the Wind from the African American slave perspective. Wonderfully written.

This is one of the best narrators I've ever read. It's a hard read, but important. I am sad I have to part with this book now.

Came across this somewhere as a classic must read book. An interesting version of the Civil War, from the perspective of woman who was a house slave. Told in a simple manner, the story spans several decades and in the face of horrendous treatment and events, Vyry maintains her hope and faith in humanity.

A good saga spanning the end of slavery, Civil War, and Reconstruction focusing on Vyry, the child of a slave and the white master, and her family. The description of the setting and time made it all very real, but I felt the characterization was lacking. It was very long, and despite being over 500 pages, I never felt close to Vyry or the other main characters.
