“It’s necessary to have wished for death in order to know how good it is to live.”
Wow. This is LITERATURE. The Count of Monte Cristo is one of the best tales ever put to paper, and an incredibly satisfying revenge story that is an absolute must read for anyone who enjoys reading and literature. It has everything: action, romance, betrayal, suspense, mystery, murder, etc. you’ll laugh; you’ll cry. Every character is memorable, and the spans of time covered between Paris and Rome make this feel truly like an epic saga.

This book absolutely rips
Shoutout to my boys Luigi Vampa, Ali, Abbé Faria
Comin’ at you live from Les Champs-Élysées
Hope and wait gang stand up
This is a top 3 book for me and an easy five stars. Fun fact: it’s nearly 1300 pages because it was published as recurring serials in a newspaper running from 1844-1846. So every chapter really gives you something juicy as well as a reason to tune in next week, or now keep turning pages. Dumas’ father was a cavalry officer under Napoleon in Egypt, and later a general at Waterloo. So while Dumas is writing about Bonapartist conspiracies, his family was directly connected with multiple generations of Bonapartes professionally and socially. So that’s neat.
It’s also wild how many other stories and characters this book has influenced. Zoro is basically Mexican Monte Christo. Tio Salamanca and his wheelchair and bell from breaking bad are absolutely ripped from Noirtier.
Also, you can even watch the movie first and it doesn’t ruin the book because they are so different but both amazing regardless of the changes the movie made.
Great book. Highly recommend. 10/10.

Quite possibly the best book I’ve ever read. Couldn’t put it down.
Well, I got the date wrong for book club and finished this one a week early. Oops!
I really, really enjoyed this book. It was engaging for the entire 1100 pages, which is no small feat. There are so many small things about how each of the characters ended up that I loved--Eugenie Danglars, for instance, is living the dream. I dinged a star because

Spoiler
my dear sweet Edmond, why did you have to get with the LITERAL TEENAGE SLAVE that you raised from childhood??? What the actual fuck, dude??? You could have had such a romantic subplot with a partner your own age, but no!!
There’s no such thing as the “perfect” story. After all, any story is read from a subjective lens. The Count of Monte Cristo isn’t the perfect story, but in my opinion it’s damn near close.
From page 1 to 1100+ this book drew me in to its fascinating and human plot.
Each character is fleshed out and given closure that is satisfying.
Dumas perfectly weaves his web of plot and characters so that every detail has relevance.
Don’t let the large page count scare you. This book, unlike many others, warrants every word in order to bring about a satisfying conclusion to every scheme and character.
