Among the first chapter books I read as a kid.
Some parts were especially scary for me, a child who could not watch fraggle rock because it gave her nightmares.

It was fun to read with the kids, even though a bit dated by now :) They still enjoyed it!

I’ve so enjoyed finally entering the world of Roald Dahl as an adult and usually enjoy the wickedness, but I found this one really unpleasant at points. Charlie lacks agency, and things just happen to him, unlike in other Dahl books where children save the day. Kids loved it though.

“I am the maker of music, the dreamer of dreams!”

Wonderful is the dream-like world that Roald Dahl has drawn up that the world of his is surpassed by only his imagination. The wonders and the adventures are as candid and flossed as the candies made by Mr Wonka in the wonderful chocolate factory of his. What a world he draws, this creativity is humbling and the world he draws up is one that can be watched in awe and utter dumbfoundness alone.

A beautiful story, that is as beautiful as the place it takes place in.

Finished reading this to Rabeya tonight, it was her first "real" book (i.e. longer than a Beatrix Potter book). I had forgotten how pointed Dahl was in this. He makes it clear, to an extent never present in either film adaptation, that although the four children are brutes and louts, it is their parents who are to blame for their failings.

I read this as a child several decades ago and chose it as a quick re-read, and am so glad I did that. The story and characters are fun and intriguing, the illustrations are great, and I'd forgotten about the Oompa-Loompas! From the perspective of an adult, there is a lot of wit and wisdom (some a bit dated but still thought provoking) I probably missed or didn't like the first time around. When I rated this from memory upon shelving it to GoodReads I gave it a 4. It's a 5 now, and I'm off to find the several other books Dahl wrote that relate to this one which will all be new to me.

‘ Just imagine , ’ cried Mr Wonka , ‘ when I start using this across the country … you’ll be sitting at home watching television and suddenly a commercial will flash on to the screen and a voice will say , “ EAT WONKA’S CHOCOLATES ! THEY’RE THE BEST IN THE WORLD ! IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE US , TRY ONE FOR YOURSELF – NOW ! ” And you simply reach out and take one ! How about that , eh ? ’ ‘ Terrific ! ’ cried Grandpa Joe . ‘ It will change the world ! ’

This was a fun read-aloud, and it prompted lots of questions about why the kids weren’t listening very well. I appreciated that it mentions all of the kids leaving the factory at the end because otherwise it would have been quite morbid!

Cute throwback to childhood. I liked this book (and the original movie, none of that remake crap!) when I was a kid so it was fun to listen to it again.
