I read this because my first grader's class was, of course I know the story and watched the movies hundreds of times. But when reading I realized I don't think I've ever read the book! It was lyrical not only with the Oompa Loompa songs but throughout. New images sprang in my head not in the movies. And you truly could appreciate roald dahl's imagination. He's great.

first time reading this to Noelle - she loved it.

Pretty silly but maybe a bit too advanced for my 4yo just yet.

Z Jonom zabava.

Read aloud with Ben. He loved it.

We watched the movie (the new one—though I prefer the old) last night on TV (in French), which reminded me that I'd happened to have bought the book at Savers and brought it with me to France. I'd actually never read it before, and was curious to find out the differences between both films and the book.

What a creative storyteller!

I grew up watching the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka. We’ve been thinking about showing it to the kids. One day, my 5 yo son asked if he could listen to audiobooks like I do so we searched Libby for some books that might fit him. He chose a book about earthquakes first but then we decided to listen to Charlie & The Chocolate Factory as a family during dinner.

I was impressed with how well they did with the older movie (I haven’t seen the newer Johnny Depp one). I will also say this was the first Dahl book I’ve ever read & I thought it was great. No wonder they made a movie out of it. I also will say that the audio narrator, Douglas Hodge, did a phenomenal job. Highly recommend this one for kids & parents.

One word of caution for reading it with kids. Be prepared to have a conversation about how we no longer find it acceptable to say certain things about people like referring to them as being fat.

Content warnings: body/fat shaming, staving, some harsh language, bullying, poverty

A classic. Just finished reading it out loud to the kids at bedtime.

Since childhood, I’ve always loved the classic movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but for some reason, I had never read the Roald Dahl book that it was inspired by. This week my 8-year-old son and I decided to listen to the audiobook together and see what started it all. It was SO fun! A lot was kept the same, but as usual, a nimber of changes took place when converting the book to the movie. We loved the sound effects, British accents, different voices, creative sweet treat creations, and all the silly phrases and songs. We can’t decide if we like the audiobook or the movie better. They are both great! Thank you, Mr. Dahl, for creating the amazing world of Wonka. We can’t wait to start the next book in the series: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator! We give this book five scrumdiddlyumptious Wonka chocolate bars! 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫
