I grew up watching the Gene Wilder version of Willy Wonka. We’ve been thinking about showing it to the kids. One day, my 5 yo son asked if he could listen to audiobooks like I do so we searched Libby for some books that might fit him. He chose a book about earthquakes first but then we decided to listen to Charlie & The Chocolate Factory as a family during dinner.
I was impressed with how well they did with the older movie (I haven’t seen the newer Johnny Depp one). I will also say this was the first Dahl book I’ve ever read & I thought it was great. No wonder they made a movie out of it. I also will say that the audio narrator, Douglas Hodge, did a phenomenal job. Highly recommend this one for kids & parents.
One word of caution for reading it with kids. Be prepared to have a conversation about how we no longer find it acceptable to say certain things about people like referring to them as being fat.
Content warnings: body/fat shaming, staving, some harsh language, bullying, poverty

A classic. Just finished reading it out loud to the kids at bedtime.

Since childhood, I’ve always loved the classic movie Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, but for some reason, I had never read the Roald Dahl book that it was inspired by. This week my 8-year-old son and I decided to listen to the audiobook together and see what started it all. It was SO fun! A lot was kept the same, but as usual, a nimber of changes took place when converting the book to the movie. We loved the sound effects, British accents, different voices, creative sweet treat creations, and all the silly phrases and songs. We can’t decide if we like the audiobook or the movie better. They are both great! Thank you, Mr. Dahl, for creating the amazing world of Wonka. We can’t wait to start the next book in the series: Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator! We give this book five scrumdiddlyumptious Wonka chocolate bars! 🍫🍫🍫🍫🍫

I just finished reading this to my second graders. They absolutely loved it. It was one of my some 50 something years ago. I don’t see how this could ever get old. Roald Dahl was a genius.
This book is DARK chocolate: sometimes bitter, deeply complex, and yet irresistible because it is chocolate. I will admit that for some it is an acquired taste, but I would hope that all of our children acquire a taste for Roald Dahl. Expansive vocabulary and enthralling themes meet with dark humor and sometimes harsh realities that aren’t always present in children’s literature. This promises to spark discussion and imagination about the characters and morals within the text.

I love this and it is exactly like the movie except for the ending.
I actually like the book ending better :)
Charlie is a wholesome, unselfish boy. I'm not sure I like that he is flawless, but I like his character a lot. All the other children are flawed and it makes them interesting and believable, but we never get to know Charlie so deeply as we know them. I really like Grandpa Joe and of course, Willy Wonka! Wonka is the best character in the book.
I think the story itself is iconic and lovely. It's such a good children's story and I guess I just don't have much to say about it. I knew the story so well to begin with.
