What if, as THE BOYS posits, being a superhero is very likely to corrupt you? And what if the superheroes decided they were gods who ought to be in charge, and they ruled by fear and fiat?
The human beings who answered back would be our heroes, eh?

Steelheart imagines such a world and a small cabal of revolutionaries who are working to fight against the "Epics," as they're called. This book is a rollicking good time, if a bit light. The main character, an eighteen or nineteen year-old man who has spent his whole life planning to fight against the Epics finds himself connected to them, and the adventure begins.

The least effective part of the book, for me, is the "perfect protagonist" at the heart of the story. He's good at just the right things and does just what he needs to do. He's annoyingly horny and bad at talking to 'girls,' but this feels more like an artifice put in to give him a way to grow more than a natural facet of the character.

That said, I enjoyed this book quite a bit and will check out some other Brandon Sanderson titles.

Brandon Sanderson keeps improving with every book that he writes. That man has magic in his quill. As good a book in this genre as any other I've read. Brilliant and captivating storytelling.

Very entertaining read. There are a lot of unanswered questions left at the end of the book, about what the Epics are and how they came about, so the sequels are in my future. Brandon Sanderson certainly has quite an imagination!

Sanderson started 2 YA series in 2013. This is probably the better one of the 2. Lots of surprises, interesting characters and dialog, and keeps its target audience in mind. Fast paced too, without descending into an action movie.

BTW, where's the last book from his first YA series, Alcatraz? It's been more than 5 years, I think he could just sell it as an ebook at this point to give obsessive-compulsive people like me some closure..

My first Young Adult book by Brandon Sanderson, and I thought it was okay, not amazing. At first, I was really into it, but then it got a bit slow before picking up again. The characters weren't that interesting to me, so I mainly enjoyed it for the story. It's a fun, light read, good for when you want something easy. But I don’t think I care enough about the characters or the story to read the next book. If you like superheroes and stories about getting revenge, you might like it. The book's worldbuilding is really cool, and the plot twists at the end made it better (which I did not see coming). I hope his Skyward series is a better YA experience for me because this one didn’t impress me much. I'd need someone to convince me to keep reading this series.

Riveting from the start, although constantly surprised at the mesh of advanced technology and complete post-apocalytic dystopian settings

Loved reading about the birth of the epics, and the different powers that they each inhabited.
David was a fun protagonist.

Abraham fan cast: Mark Strong.
