Meh. The story was kind of a mess. Hard to keep track of some of the characters. I did appreciate the Albanian setting, a nice diversion from the usual English scenery. The main love story was okay. However the central male character was not very likeable.

sooo freaking long. It was honestly kind of boring and I hated both of the main characters. So just Mehhh. BUT I have heard nothing but good things about this author so I still plan on trying another of her books. But this one was a total waste, in my opinion.

Would not recommend this as a starting point for new historical romance readers OR for someone new to Loretta Chase. Check content warnings. This was written in 1992 and it feels like it was written in 1992, unlike later installments in this series, which hold up much better for today's readers. The things I loved (the love story itself once it reached the second half, the character development for Varian, Esme) ultimately couldn't outweigh the Islamophobia, fatphobia, and absolutely textually unnecessary miscommunication plotline centered around the FMC's age that takes up a solid 50% of the book's conflict.
Graphic: Racism, Abandonment, Racial slurs, and Sexual content
Moderate: Islamophobia, Murder, Injury/Injury detail, Grief, Death of parent, Cultural appropriation, Colonisation, Fatphobia, Kidnapping, Violence, and Slavery
Minor: Sexual assault, Sexual harassment, and Homophobia

I've read Lord of Scoundrels some years ago and I completely loved it, so of course I wanted to read more by Loretta Chase. Curiously, this was just my second book by her and it was also a great story.
I loved the dynamics between Esme and Varian. I was pleasantly surprised that, even though Varian was supposed to be this huge rake, he was the one who surrended almost immediately. I was astounded at how vulnerable and tender Esme made him from the beginning. Esme was also a great heroine. That girl had a lot of fire in her and I found myself chuckling and laughing with her antics. Finally, I loved the fact this book took place in Albania for a great deal of the story. It is always nice to read about places other than London.

First book I've ever read by Loretta. I liked the concept. It made me look up Albania on a map and research the country. I like reading a non traditional romance. I'm going to read book 2 in the series. Just wish the pacing was a little quicker in places.

The plot is all over the place, the conversations are repetitive, and the characters weird and unsympathetic. It's getting three stars instead of two because I learned something about Albanian history and culture in the 1800s.
