Stunner of a rapportage from the coal mines of England in the 1930s--he really feels for the folk, yet comes at it with a self-awareness of his own prejudices--a very valuable viewpoint for the history books. And then the other half of the book is more socialist and personal, interesting but sort of ill-fitting. No matter, Orwell fan here!

You can see the seeds of Animal Farm here

This was a particularly enlightening book as it illuminates the difficult lives lead by those who preceded us. The first have of the book describes the tough times in rural England and the second half of the book Orwell describes what I would say was an epiphany for Orwell with regards to his understanding of Socialism.
If for no other reason, the first half of the book is worth reading to remember how fortunate we are to be living in today's world. The second half of the book is worth reading because motives matter.

This is a great book, it’s a non-fiction about the industrial heartlands of the north of England in the 1930s, focusing particularly on the working class, the coal miners in particular. George Orwell spent a lot of time living amongst the people and observing the standard of living. It was just fascinating and made me realise that some things truly never change. Orwell’s comments on the housing crisis, the prevalence of alcoholism, gambling, and unhealthy food, and how welfare was influencing how the poorest in society lived their lives. I found it chilling how Orwell describes the revulsion the middle classes of the time felt towards the working class, and how ironic it was they loathed the very people they claimed to be championing through socialism and were out of touch even then! I mean seriously, nothing has changed.

This is a fascinating read, I would highly recommend. Im sure George Orwell is spinning in his grave at these strange lives we lead in this country now.

A few sections fall well below Orwell's typical standard, but overall this book is an absolute gem. His deeply human descriptions of the northern working-class, and his honest and clear-sighted discussion of socialist strategy, are highly profound and of incredible value.
