It's a bit more of a "summarization" of anti-diet culture/body neutrality writing combined with the author's personal journal. But it is an easy-to-read kick in the pants reminder that we don't need to be "fixed" because we aren't a size 2 or that we aren't a "before" version of the "after" we think we ought to be after forcing our bodies through extreme change. (There's also a good bibliography at the back for those who want to do deeper reading dives.)

It was just a really nice, supportive read. And sometimes we need that.

Very self-affirming, and not too heavy a read. This is a great self-help book for anyone new to diet culture research who doubts themselves and has issues with accepting their body. If you’re well versed in this topic you might be disappointed with the book. I hate diet culture so obviously the book appealed to me. Having read it, I’m left feeling like it wasn’t finished or perhaps was too heavily edited. Something is missing… it never quite feels fully fleshed out.

I've been a fan of Alex Light for a while now so I was eagerly awaiting the release of this book, and it did not disappoint. In fact, it managed to exceed my high expectations!

Alex's journalistic experience shines through, as she seamlessly weaves scientific explanations, personal anecdotes and input from other experts in their field. She acknowledges her privilege and limitations, and uses this space to highlight others.

What I really loved is how practical a lot of it was, without ever slipping into the general non-fiction faux pas of oversimplifying things or repeating the same advice. She had genuine tips and examples of what helped her, but also acknowledged that these are starting steps and subjective.

I've struggled with my eating disorder on and off since at least 15, and this is the first book that's actually given me hope and made me feel understood. I wish this book could be mandatory reading for everyone, and I'll be recommending it until everyone is sick of hearing about it.
