Adventures of Huckleberry Finn: A Case Study in Critical Controversy

I can't say I loved this book, but I certainly can say I appreciate Mark Twain's writing and the insight he showed through the character of Huck. Twain points out a lot of profound things through Huck's relatively innocent eyes and ears and that a lot about 19th century America. Adventures truly are the stuff of Huck Finn; surprisingly I found myself eager to continue reading to find out what would happen next. The happy ending -well ok. . . .

Love what Huckleberry Finn does as an odyssey of a time and a place, life along the Mississippi River in the 1840s, a simulacrum of the way things were in Twain’s childhood and life; in bursts of the absurd, the scary, the everyday minutiae, adventure, the wonders of nature, local mythologies, class discrepancy, preachers, loafers, disguises, runaway slaves. He has a wit and fullness of life that I love, and a keen awareness of the underbelly of darkness of the times.
“I laid there, and had a good rest and a smoke out of my pipe, looking away into the sky; not a cloud in it. The sky looks ever so deep when you lay down on your back in the moonshine; I never knowed it before. And how far a body can hear on the water such nights! I heard people talking at the ferry landing. I heard what they said, too—every word of it…”
“But the next day I went exploring around down through the island. I was boss of it; it all belonged to me, so to say, and I wanted to know all about it; but mainly I wanted to put in the time.”
Twain’s sense of physicality and place is beautiful and something that brings me a lot of joy. Such a funny book, it rolls along in strange rambling fashion but it’s so enjoyable to read.

Yikes. I was bored reading Tom Sawyer & ten pages into this it had said the n-word so many times. Didn’t wanna waste my time.
I’ll just read the summary of the book and probably won’t be missing out on much.
