4/5.
Being the third Sandra Brown book that I've read, I had really high expectations going into this book, but "Friction" did not let me down.
Like all of Brown's books, this book kept me on the edge of my seat. Every chapter ends on a cliff hanger which made me want to continue reading. The book is very fast paced and the author did a very good job at keeping the plot moving and I was completely taken by surprise by the twist and turns.
Unlike The Collector by Nora Roberts, I really enjoyed the romance aspect of this book. I never felt like the relationship between Crawford and Holly was pushed, rather it felt natural and I ended up really rooting for them in the end. They are both spitfires in their own way and their relationship really complements their strengths and weaknesses.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you are a bit underwhelmed by recent thrillers, I highly recommend this book. It will not let you down.

Why do I bother? These books are beyond predictable (was there even a mystery component?) but like my awful Hallmark movies, I just keep plodding through. Not even sure there was much of a plot here - was the main theme just about star crossed lovers engaging in graphic sex? Perhaps that was the theme and I am the one who set the bar too high...

Good story that was easy to read quickly. The biggest issue for me is that the bad characters were using racial slurs that for me didn't really seem necessary to solidify that they were not good people. It didn't add anything to their character or make a big or important impact of anything relevant. Admittedly, that irritation may just be me because it's not written in an offensive way and I will continue reading through my stack of backlist Sandra Brown books.

I really liked the mystery and the various family relationships Crawford had but the romance was kinda blah after an angsty start and Holly turned out to be so disappointingly one dimensional
Sandra Brown does a fantastic job of writing flawed characters that suck you right into their intense, suspense-driven world from the very first page, and Friction is no exception. Crawford Hunt has a tendency to act first, think later--a quality that can be good in law enforcement but also can lead to trouble, and for him it does both. He's got a self-proclaimed "caveman mentality" and a tendency to go alone and believe he's always right. But he also is fiercely loyal, fights for justice, and loves his little girl Georgia like no one's business...
And is a cowboy hat- and boot-wearing Texas Ranger--"tall, blond, and badass" as one character puts it. So, yeah. He had me from the second he stood in the doorway of the pink-on-pink bedroom he'd had set up for his five-year-old daughter in anticipation of her finally moving in with him full-time.
I was a goner.
And so was Judge Holly Spencer, though not quite so quickly--it took her a few hours, at least. ;)
Even though the actions of the book take place over only five days--five days!--so much happens, the plot take so many surprising twists and turns that it feels like a much longer time span. Technically one could look at Crawford and Holly's relationship and argue it has an element of insta-lust if not insta-love, but it really didn't feel like it. I totally bought into their relationship 100%, regardless of the time involved. Given what they went through and the relatively slow build-up of their relationship (I know, five days! But somehow it still felt like a slow, steady build-up. I can't explain it--Sandra Brown has some powerful writing mojo), it felt completely realistic.
Once again Ms. Brown has also done a stellar job with the suspense part of the plot. The main antagonist became clear somewhat early on, though his motivation remained a mystery until he himself revealed it. Suspense stories are all about the surprise twists and turns, and Friction has them in spades. I love going into a Sandra Brown book, knowing that I'm going to be in for one heck of a non-stop ride; Friction definitely did not disappoint.
Friction has earned its place on my keeper shelf for sure--I'll be reading this one again. And again. And probably again...

I've been reading Sandra Brown since the 80's, and will always pick one of her books up when i see them at the library.
This one was hard to get into, and seemed different somehow. Too many "gotchas" that are usually missing from her books. disappointing.

Sandra Brown is known for writing about alpha males: dark heroes with a crack in their facade. Men whom have secrets but try to pretend that nothing is wrong. FRICTION was one such story.
Crawford Hunt, a Texas Ranger, had gone back to court to retrieve his parental rights for full-time custody of his young daughter, Georgia. He had voluntarily surrendered it several years earlier after his wife had died in an accident. They were dark days and he was the first to admit he was not a suitable father at the time but he went through the necessary counseling. He also provided the other requirements to make a comfortable dwelling for his child. He was ready to bring Georgia home.
Judge Holly Spencer was presiding at court when Crawford petitioned her to remove his daughter's guardianship from his former in-laws. They were good people but their bias prohibited him from taking a permanent role with fatherhood.
Before a decision could be made, chaos broke loose. A gunman had entered the courtroom shooting the bailiff and attempting to shoot the judge. Before he had time to think, Crawford's instinct kicked in and he ended up saving the adjudicator.
Unintentionally, Crawford gets involved with Holly.
There were plenty of the usual plot devices but that was to be expected when the entire story took place over just a few days. I knew what to expect of Crawford but I expected Holly to be smarter and stronger; after all, she was a judge. Lastly, if you can get past the thought that for 99.9999% of us this would never be a part of our reality, FRICTION was a good-hearted but somewhat mellow blend of romance and suspense.

This was a great story. I haven't read a Sandra Brown book in a while but now I remember why I love them. It had suspense and romance in just the right amounts. I couldn't put the book down. I enjoyed the structure of the book, the characters, and the story. Well done!
