This is a lot more than just a book, I think. This novel is literary entropy. Reading it, all that is solid and defined about books is shattered into a thousand pieces which reflect light back on each other and seem to open up a window to the infinite. Calvino resoundingly succeeds in perhaps the most ambitious project a writer can engage in: he turns the reflective powers of the written word back upon itself. No book can stand on its own; all books, all stories, fragments, and sentences, all readings and conversations are incomplete, contingent, and undefined. Neither do they end on the page - they extend into the minds, actions, societies, and worlds of their writers and readers, who - like texts - bleed into one another and overlap. At the foundation of everything there is no subject and no object; no "you" and no "I". There is only undifferentiated substance, and energy, and thought. Calvino reminds us that as humans - as incomplete fragments of the universe that are nonetheless capable of language and communication - we are blessed with the opportunity to participate in this process of cosmic articulation and rearticulation. And that, I think, is a really beautiful thing.

Calvino stesso asserisce che questo romanzo è sul piacere della lettura e sinceramente non mi sento di dissentire. Ma magari trattasse solo di questo!
E' un libro sulla lettura a trecentosessanta gradi. E' un libro sull'editoria e sul mondo contorto che ne consegue. E' un libro che mi fa gioire del fatto che ora esistano i computer ed è difficile perdere un romanzo.
Sinceramente? Calvino non si smentisce mai. Ma iniziare dieci romanzi diversi, senza poterne portare uno a termine è stato frustante. Cambiava genere, trama, traccia. Un delirio di scrittura! E' come se io prendessi tutti i miei mirabolanti scritti e li unissi in un susseguirsi di vicende assurde ed astratte - del resto, è questo ciò che Calvino fa.
Mentre lo terminavo pensavo che la Lettrice fosse una specie di Mary Sue. Adesso che ci rifletto con freddezza - e a stomaco pieno - capisco che invece non era la Lettrice l'oggetto di cui desiderava parlare il caro Italo... Ma la Lettura, anch'essa donna, anch'essa controversa ed affamata. Se fondo Lettrice e Lettura capisco l'intendo di Calvino, se fossi stata superficiale avrei odiato profondamente la devozione degli scrittori per la donna. Ma si sa: la lettura è donna!

What a wild ride. At times it was hard to get through, but by the end it was all really worth it.
