Real Murders

Charlaine Harris

3.47 AVERAGE

I enjoyed the mystery, I'm lukewarm about the characters. With the exception of Roe, none of the characters felt well developed, which made it difficult to care much about them. Maybe there were just too many--2 love interests, 4 victims, a host of townies, a slew of featureless library employees, volunteers, and patrons--all introduced in too few pages.

Now that some of the world building is done, however, I am looking forward to reading the next book.

Bless Charlaine Harris heart, this 90's read feel very dated. But maybe it is just too small town Southern for me. I loved Harris' Sookie books, but these Aurora books don't live up to them, even with the premise of this one being so good - a serial killer reenacting famous murders, mostly targeting a true crime study group and their loved ones. I was just bored, and there were so many lines about the small and delicate Aurora who was a spinster (in her 30s and not married! oh my!) that were just eye rolling at this day in age.

Overall it was fine. But I will not continue to read the series.

RATING: 3.5 STARS

After watching the TV show, True Blood, I knew I had to try the book series they were based on. I enjoyed them but didn't finish the series. Maybe because I read them too close together, but they were starting to blend into one another. I do want to finish the TV series, but after season 3 I got behind as I did not have HBO and had to wait till they were in at the library. In 2019 I watched the Hallmark TV movie based on book two ([b:A Bone to Pick|140093|A Bone to Pick (Aurora Teagarden, #2)|Charlaine Harris|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1307067211l/140093._SY75_.jpg|2654183]), and then the second movie based on this book. I enjoyed the cute fun movies so being the book nerd I am, I HAD to at least try the books!

I am glad I did, as I enjoyed this book. Aurora's personality comes more alive in the books as there is more time to explore the backgrounds of the characters. In the book, Aurora's father and half-brother are present and while Philip (the brother) is cute and vital to the ending of the book, I can see why they weren't in the movie. Some of the other characters have been changed around, and the storyline of Roe-Arthur-Lynn makes more sense in the books. I rated this book as a 3.5 instead of 4 is because while they are fun to read, there isn't much to them other than that. I would probably not re-read them again. I did this time, only because I was getting confused with the movie version and wanted to get it all straight in my head before continuing the series. This is one of the reasons I will read them all in one shot and before I continue with the movies.

Shows its age, but it’s still an enjoyable audiobook.

I enjoyed this book. I am curious to read the next one in this series and to see which man she will be with and to see her solve another murder.

So, apparently my taste in books has changed since the first time I read this in 2008. It drove me NUTS that the main focus for the main character seemed to be not figuring out who was committing these horrible murders in her small hometown, but rather on figuring out if she's considered a "hussy" for dating two men. The reveal of the killer seemed to come out of nowhere, and...argh. Overall, just argh.

I just wasn't interested enough to keep reading.

A little too light and fluffy as far as my tastes run for a murder mystery, but a fairly fun, quick read.
