Dragons and shifters and fae oh my!

This was beyond wonderful. I have never read anything by Emma L Adams before but I have to say she is very quickly (after just this one book) making her way up the list of my favorite authors. After this review I shall go off and buy and read everything else she has ever written.

Ember is easily one of my favorite female leads ever. Her devotion, love and care for her sister grabs right a hold of your heart from the start. She is a low profile, no kill but do what we must to survive person. Her hold on her temper is amazing considering shes a dragon. But when something happens to her sister she would move heaven, earth and hell to save her. i can relate because i feel the same. i have a little sister that i also would burn the world for (not as young and shes old enough to take care of herself but still). Ember is how I imagine all good big sisters to be. At least if they shapeshifted into a creature with scaly armor and fire breathing ;)

our ex-hunter friend(ish). i still cannot tell what he thinks or feels about anyone else. i have an inclination but refuse to say it in case i am wrong (no one can say i am wrong if i don't say what the inclination is before hand wahahahaha). i do feel bad for him. family killed by shapeshifters only to find yourself having to help them. its a tough spot especially with all the prejudice he grows up having and all the propaganda he is exposed to as a child. i do look forward to more from him.

Will the half witch/half gargoyle (best and most hilarious combo in the world i assure you). is silly, flirty, and a bit of a trickster. One of Embers other companions is a half blind cat shapeshifter....ya you read that right lol. Becks is not only half blind but I just couldn't stop laughing at her very sarcastic glass half full personality. not to mention whenever it talks about her fighting it makes me think about a house cat on crack. lots of fun there. :)

the plot made for an amazing read because it was topics you had heard before but different twists making it comfortable and exciting. Fae invasion, battle for supremacy, humans using corrupt methods to come out on top, deeper wars that no one knows about taking place. and somehow the rare and highly coveted dragons fit in.... (and no sorry i will not tell you the twists. you want to know read the book!)

As I said before amazing read so go and buy it now!

Where to start, mhm.

So, first of all. The genre sounded really cool and promising! I'm a sucker for supernatural beings, especially when it's
Spoilera supernatural and a hunter
.

Well, listen. I was kind of disappointed at the lackluster appearance of 'em. Like, I know it sounds weird, because there has been mention of them: dragon shifter, cat shifter, half-gargoyle half-witch -- like, those are really cool premises but there has been no lore, nothing interesting about their story, about their species. The world-building was kind of just downright missing. There have been mentions of Mage Lords, and the Seelie and Unseelies, but there is just no explanation - not in telling us or showing us.

I wasn't quite confused throughout the book, I was just...not interested as much. Same goes for the characters and the plot - it was just flat. I really dislike saying that about books, but I couldn't care about the characters at all. The only one I cared about was the MC, and that's because I'm reading from her perspective. Beck and Will? While I'm sympathetic towards them, I didn't know why they'd risk themselves like that, what is in for them (and even if there was nothing in it for them, that wasn't even mentioned too). There was just...no explanation, no good characterisation. Will a little bit more than Beck, but even that was not as good.

The plot was simple and clear, but I didn't quite connect to it either, tbh. I was kind of bored in some parts, but the writing style was fluent and easy enough that I didn't really get stuck, either. I just felt that nothing really happened, despite action stuff happening, like it was one thing after the other wihout some plan happening. I think I was just not that engaged tbh.

Like, for example. The entire smuggling into the League Prison -- it should've been really tense and suspenseful, but I was just reading it, giving no second thought to it really, because it felt so distant and so chaotic and without any real weight to it.

And the oncoming romance? I can't believe it. Like, I know there's bound to be something between Ember and Astor, but it was less chemistry and more like two sides clashing and that's it. I wouldn't know how this relationship wants to be built properly.

I don't know. It was okay, I don't particularly dislike it, nor particularly like it. I wouldn't recommend it nor try to keep others from reading it. I was just...not interested. (That being said, I hate not finishing a series unless it's absolutely terrible for me, so I will be reading the next book).

Alight

I thought the idea of dragon shifters was really cool and the Orion League was sort of awesome in that really well written antagonist kind of way. I can't wait to see what happens next.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and voluntarily reviewed it.

I was so excited when I heard of this new series by Emma L Adams. I really enjoy Emma's books and this series sounded really good. It takes place in the same world as her Changeling series, but it takes place in a different place and sooner after the invasion than the Changeling series. It also has a very different focus, namely more on the shifters. I am a big fan of shifter books, so I really liked how the author put the focus on shifters in this book. And it even has some original type of shifters!

Alight was a well paced book with lots of action and focus on shifters. There were some great action scenes. Shifters have been hunted by The League's hunters even before the invasion by the faeries. But even now they still hunt shifters and other supernaturals. They are quite devoted to their mission. The book started with a chapter that shows where Ember and her sister Cori are when the invasion takes place and it instantly got me into the story. Then we switch to two years later and the story continues. Most of the story deals with The League and how Ember and her friends try to avoid them and stay alive, but when her sister gets captured she decides to do whatever it takes to get her back.

Ember was a great main character to read about, she was fiercely protective of her sister and friends. I liked reading about her dragon side and form. She doesn't remember the first few years of her life and she doesn't know if there are any other dragon shifters except for her sister, so there's a bit of mystery there as well. She only has this notebook, with parts she can't read. Then there are her best friends who are both shifters as well. It was fun to read more about the shifters in this world and get to know more about them. Becks and Will were interesting side characters. But I was even more curious about Astor, we learn bits and pieces from him and I enjoyed reading about him. There is a hint of a possible romance, but it's a subplot line mostly. I did like that hint or romance though and I am curious how that will progress.

I already knew a bit about this world thanks to having read most of the Changeling series, so it felt a bit familiar already. but this book shows a very different view and part of this world, so it felt new and fresh as well. And we learn a lot more about the hunters, the League and shifters, which were all things that weren't addressed as much in the Changeling series or not like this. It was great to return to a familiar world and follow new characters and a different focus. It also felt a tad darker than the Changeling series, especially at the end when we get a glimpse of what exactly the League does with shifters they capture.

To summarize: I really enjoyed this book and getting to return to a world I already knew, but with a different focus. Alight takes place in the same world as the Changeling series, but in a different time and it focuses more on the hunters and shifters. I liked reading about the different type of shifters and the focus on shifters was great! It is action packed and well paced and it kept my attention during the whole book. Ember was a great main character to read about and I liked the fact she was a dragon shifter. There's a hint of a possible romance, but it stays pretty much to the sidelines. The world already felt a bit familiar as it was the same world as the Changeling series, but it felt very different as well. I am looking forward to read book 2!

I really enjoyed the Changeling series but I struggled with this one a bit at times. Not really sure why as it is certainly action packed and due to reading the Changeling series I had a good idea of the world building. I guess maybe it just felt a little aimless and unplanned (kind of like Ember's life and quest to rescue her sister) and I wasn't very invested in any of the only four characters that get any really page time. I will likely read the others in the trilogy because I got all 3 in a box set but I am in no rush.

Someone really needed to go back over that writing again. Yikes.

I don't even know where to begin...

1. The plot- The entire storyline is a rescue mission. However there is no planning. No character building just endless action. So the plot is basically "Run, save sister, run"
2. Characters- As I said before, there is virtually no character development in the entirety of this novel. Pretty much every character we are introduced to has one quality and that's it. There is absolutely no backstory, characterization, or really any personality shown in any of the characters.
3. World- I think my biggest problem with the world the author was trying to build in this novel is that they did too much into small of a book. The author tried to create a very complex world without developing it at all...

I am super disappointed overall. I love dragons. But this... this was a travesty.
