It's good introduction to this series.
It's fast, easy to fall into, the characters are interesting, you get to read a sci-fi book without it being to out of reach. Will I read the rest ? probably not, not because of the story but because I am less and less interested in YA books right now.

But if you want a quick fast paced sci fi story, this one is for you :)

enjoyable enough ya, I was just not feeling the vibes of finishing a book at the time.

This is a fun YA sci/fi adventure. Romantic, compelling and smart, for the most part. Full of fascinating ideas about the future (and the future of Earth in particular,) ecology, technology, and religion. I don't read much Young Adult at all. And while I really enjoyed this, it did get a little cheesy in places. Having said that, I must admit there were a few points where I was expecting a more cliched choice and the author surprised me by going somewhere else.

4.2/5 | In which a whirlwind romance comes to life.

Hard to rate because it was really, REALLY good, but I’m feeling harsh. Then again, this quote compels me to be lenient:

“Is prostitution your answer for everything?”

Oh, Abel.

P L O T

It was a slow-ish start that only took a bit of time to get into before I realised it was becoming increasingly difficult to tear my eyes away from the pages.

The plot was super jumpy, restless and full of action. Hell, some scenes were rushed as hell! Just one grand adventure in which the situations and actions helped naturally build up our two main characters and their relationship. I liked that the plot complimented the other aspects of the book!

Alas, that’s the thing, though. Theoretically, having the plot weave seamlessly into the characters and relationships is wonderful... that is, assuming they are equally important. In my totally humble opinion, this plot was overwhelmingly unremarkable.

Like, I honest to god did not give a damn about Genesis and Earth’s politics. I didn’t care about the war or the bigass gate and the electromagnet and whatever. I was prepared to give this five stars until I realised, towards the end, that I was skimming the bits about world building and legit every part where Noemi and Abel were not within a twenty metre vicinity of one another. I skimmed the prison break and the initial battle, for example, which I assume were meant to be monumental plot points.

I really would have liked a plot that could stand on its own, one that wasn’t reliant on the romance and wasn’t so, dare I say, generic? So run-of-the-mill Sci-Fi? It was just an excuse for the two main characters to be stuck together. This book was clearly more of a character-driven one, which is fine, but it bothered me. I did, however, adore the Mansfield plot line! That shit had be SHOOK.

Their end goal was destroying the gate, but MINE was just for Abel and Noemi to be together for ever and ever.

Noemi was pretty bland at first, but then she proved to be totally weak for soft Abel and I was totally weak for him too so we began to relate.

“…victory that comes from the sacrifice on an innocent isn’t a victory. It’s the end of us.”

On a more serious note, I was surprised when she began to portray these characteristics as the book went on that pointed to her remarkable kindness. I was not expecting both Sci-Fi heroes to be a couple o’ softies! I am impressed! From the first ten chapters, I anticipated a courageous, loyal, patriotic kick-ass kind of gal (your stereotypical female lead in Sci-Fi (or, as a matter of fact, in most YA), so this development was a welcome surprise!

That being said, however, I hardly saw any of her without Abel to play off of. Abel was more of his own character so, as much as it pains me to even suggest those two being apart, perhaps it was the best course of action for them to split up so that she may define herself separate from him.

Abel. One word: “Irrelevant.” This guy.

“One more strike and we’d have been killed.”
“Irrelevant.” After a pause Abel adds, “Congratulations are unnecessary.”

Take a shot every time Abel dismisses life defining moments as irrelevant. Abel’s robot humour is my favourite kind of humour. I could not stop laughing at his quips, his frankness, his naivety, his brutal intelligence, his lack of social awareness. There are plenty of funny, charming characters like Carswell Thorne or Nikolai Lantsov or bloody Percy Jackson (all of whom I love dearly), but Abel hits different. He was hilarious and endearing in an effortless way that complemented his backstory perfectly.

The question of what it means to be human, what makes you a person in your own right, was addressed throughout and it really resonated with me.

The plot may have been generic but Abel’s character, my friends, was a large breath of freshly deoxygenated air.

“Better to wear out than to rust out.”

The side characters were generally fine. I can’t say I cared much for Harriet, Zayan or that doctor guy.. but Virginia kicked ass! Mansfield was also a fascinating character whom, as much as I despise for hurting my precious Abel, am eager to see more of.

Relationships? One, in question. Try THE relationship.

“We can do this, she reminds herself, looking over at Abel. It feels natural to use we. They’re in this together now. She remembers how tenderly he cared for her when she was sick and marvels at how strange and yet wonderful it is to trust someone that much.”

These two rock. And not dull like an earth rock, but a shiny space rock! Actually, scratch the rock! These guys are elemental—and not just any element. They’re so pure they can’t be anything other than gold. That 100-karat gold that is so pure it becomes super malleable its practically a liquid like my malleable, liquidated heart after experiencing the purity of this relationship.

This is enemies to lovers done right. Their development from foes to reluctant allies to friends to soulmates was achieved in the span of under 400 pages in such a natural way! They’re hardly together together, but their friendship is just SO PRECIOUS.

Under no circumstances did I expect the relationship between an alien and a mech to be so human. (Okay, I guess alien in loose terms because, despite being from a planet other than earth, Noemi is human?) Her temper coupled with his lack of social skills was super funny, adorable, and, above all, they always had each other’s back.

“Silently he traces out a new constellation, one only he knows. One with Noemi at the very heart.”

Guys. This. Noemi and Abel. This is everything.

This was an easy and enjoyable read

The sci-fi was light and the romance was also light with a few romance tropes that had me cheesing while still enjoying it.

I did not mean I would die for you because you’re human. I mean I would die for you because I love you. (Pg 468)

I’m living.

The were a lot of things that had me rolling my eyes like how convenient a lot of things were; them getting help everywhere they go, that whole prison scenario, how quickly it takes people to travel to literal planets, how easy it is for them to hack everything, etc. Sometimes I can suspend my disbelief or even shun them completely but there has to be something I love a lot. But it this, my love was very average.
