This book was seriously amazing. I loved the whole idea of it and how it was executed. It was just so good. I haven't read a sci-fi book for a while and this was really well done. I knew I was going to like this one though because Claudia Gray is one of my favourite authors.
Noemi was an interesting character. She was so set on dying though, like all the time ready to sacrifice her life. She also had this whole, I'm so mean and push everyone away and they think I'm mean, I'm mean thing going on. Like I get it, you can stop saying that. She wasn't even that bad and she did a lot of nice things throughout the book.
I loved Abel. Adorable little mech who has been in isolation for 30 years and now has evolved to think, feel and be like a human. Abel has such a beautiful development arc and it was so nice to read every time he thought differently about something and his feelings changed and grew and it was just the best.
I'm seriously so excited to see whats coming my way with book two because this one was just so good.

This is a fun interplanetary adventure that has both heart and soul. I was intrigued by the premise: girl soldier from rebellious colony planet, Genesis, inadvertently rescues a trapped "mech" (highly sophisticated android) from Earth, the planet at war with hers--and the two combatants find they must work together, even if helping her goes against his innate programming, and helping him, a soulless android, goes against all of her upbringing as a faithful citizen of Genesis. There's a lot going on in this book: fun space opera action-adventure (think zooming through stargates! Exploring new worlds! Being on the run from the space cops!) and a deeper look at what it means to be human and to have a soul. Because "Abel," the mech, has had thirty years trapped alone on an abandoned spaceship in which to ponder life, the universe and his very existence. What are the chances that he's come out of it a different mech than he was when he started? And can Noemi overcome her prejudices and fear of the unknown in order to save her planet? She's always been a brave soldier, but just how brave is she able to be?

I enjoyed this book from the start, and could not put it down. The characters, especially Abel, are memorable and unique. The plot twists and turns in satisfying ways, and the author has created a believable galaxy "Loop" of planets that Earthers might have colonized; the reasons for colonization and war are believable and logical, but not so detailed as to bog down the story. I loved that there is room left for a possible sequel (I can only hope!) but yet there's a satisfying conclusion. This is a great book to hand to fans of [book:Across the Universe|8235178] or [book:Illuminae|23395680], or to anyone who likes to read YA science fiction with heart.

I read an advance copy of this book from Netgalley.com

4.5 stars

this book was amazing!! i listened to the audiobook, which was a new thing for me, and i absolutely loved it. i still like dual-narration and the audiobook narrators killed it on getting noemi’s and abel’s characters right. i loved their interactions, the slow build from enemies to friends to a bit of romance, and their internal development past prejudice and snap judgments to opening their minds to new possibilities. the action and science of it was fun and intriguing without being too science-y or too unbelievable. i highly recommend this book to anyone who liked the illuminae files or starflight by melissa landers, as well as anyone who enjoys a good enemies-to-lovers side plot that’s surrounded by unique action and complex worldbuilding. excited to read the rest of the series!!

DID NOT FINISH

DNF around 40%

Apparently the only space robot I care about is Iko.

Solid 4.5 stars. It took me a little bit to get into the book at the start, I think because I'm not much into war or religion and one of the main characters' life involves those two things kind of a lot.

But after the first few chapters I blew through the rest of this book. I am interested in several of the concepts at the heart of this story, namely what makes a human human? What is a soul? Can AI have a soul? And I thought this book balanced those questions well with the plot and other questions.

There were several plot elements that felt a little too convenient at times, although most of them were clearly setups for future books. But they weren't annoying enough to ruin my enjoyment. I'll definitely read the next book.

I am offically in love with Claudia Gray. Firebird was good but this was amazing! I can't wait to read the rest of the series or her Star Wars novels.

I got really sucked in to this book, I found myself thinking about it when I was at work and wondering what was gonna happen next. I was a little disappointed with the ending but as I read on here that there is likely to be a sequel, it makes sense.

Hilarious, sweet, good world building, and all around great. I was not expecting to like this book this much!

3.5 ⭐️
I honestly thought at first that I want going to continue in with this series because the beginning was interesting but not quite enough for me. I did feel like I was trying to push myself to finish it just for the sake of it. But at the 150-200 page mark it started to get much more interesting and the relationship was starting to develop with the plot as well.
I’m quite interested in continuing this now, but I do think it will not be my all time series, but it will be one I will love and go back too.
I do think I might have something for humans falling for robots and vice-versa (I mean the amount of kdramas, and movies I’ve watched with this theme), so I do think I will enjoy it.

It was really good and I can't wait to read the sequel! It was unique and action packed. Everyone should read it.
