I picked this short story to get a good jist of how Sylvia Plath writes. Over time I have heard a great deal about her works which mostly comprised of praises. In my understanding Sylvia was a literary-poetic writer who hit your chords right while she unclothed the honey laden unrealistic sheet from the cruel emotions and vulnerability of a human. So naturally when I started reading I was looking for sentences that I could highlight but I couldn't find any and the more I read the more spookier it started to get.....It was only then I thought of checking the genre, and it turned out to be Horror+Allegory
I read a review that talked about how it is more interesting to think about Plath’s writing after than actually reading it and i find myself agreeing to that big time

This was a really intriguing and moving short story! I do not usually read short stories and I enjoy the depth of novels for their companionship more, which is what prompted the 3.5, but the metaphor and symbolic nature of this story was quite stirring and resonant for me, prompting an internally spoken responsibility to connect this to my current circumstances and reflect on its value and lessons I may need to take and learn for myself. Would benefit from reading again for greater understanding and personal reflection!

At first, I thought it's the journey of life.. how our parents bring us into the world and initially make decisions for us, setting us on a path we don't fully comprehend. They send off on the train, seemingly without fully explaining where she’s headed or why, felt like a metaphor for how we’re born into circumstances, often with expectations or destinations already laid out for us.. *sits on the corner for a while with that thought*
But then...
The train ride started to feel more and more like a meditation on dying.. dark and ominous( how i like it) the sense of finality.. There is also how Mary started passive (like we'd all be) then we had the awakening and her activily trying to gain control (perhaps too late?)
I love the way Plath weaves her yarn... so sinister for a piece written when she was quiet young..
In theory it's not original.. trips/journeys = life/death... automatically had me thinking of river styx.. but with her style of writing.. I think I might remember this one

My first read from Sylvia and it was honestly kind of exhilarating for such a short story. I feel like I shouldn't need to express the message on escapism and liberation from a societal norm. I liked it.
