Not too happy that there's a big cliffhanger at the end, and nothing has been solved. I think I would've loved this book a couple of years ago, but at the moment I need something that is going to really draw me in and leave me feeling satisfied with the ending. It felt like a lot of nothing was happening for a while, but I guess maybe that's how an old school mystery like Agatha Christie or Arthur Conan Doyle write? (I've never read either of their books so I can't make a judgement). Not sure if I'm keen to read the next book...

I almost did not finish because of the pretentious language (which was purposeful) but I am so glad I kept reading. I used this as part of my reading challenge for 2024 and was going to use it as a locked room mystery but decided instead for the abrupt ending as literally no answers were given. I will read the whole series and will recommend as well.

After a night spent thinking about this book I can finally give my option. I liked this book. I liked it a lot. In fact, all throughout the book I was thinking this was going to be among my favourite reads of 2018. But then I came to the end of the book and it kinda ruined the whole experience. Why? Because of that damn cliffhanger. It was sooo unnecessary and kinda messed up and confusing. I get that there are two (TWO!!!) more books coming out but I think crime/mystery novel, as good as they are, should give you the answer you have been waiting for at the end of it. They're not made for sequels. I would have liked it better if the writer had decided to make another book about the same girl solving another mystery. That would have been a lot more interesting. Instead, what I got was an never ending series of unanswered questions running through my mind which are supposedly going to be answered in the next books, adding more and more details and characters to an already good story. But maybe I'm taking too soon. Maybe I should really wait and read what's coming next

This book was not what I thought it was when I started reading it

I don’t even know how it showed up in my queue maybe a booktok thing?

Anyways going in it with literally no idea what it was supposed to be I found it fun. I will say they are teenagers acting like not teenagers on the hands of they’re maybe rich and smart or just too smart for their own good???

There is a lot of not depth to characters so I had no real feelings if they lived or died or disappeared

I’ll read the next book cause why not

I just really love Maureen Johnson’s books, and this one was no exception. I’m immediately ready to go get the next one, I need answers! The mystery was extremely interesting and I love reading about someone who I can relate to so much. Murder podcasts and anxiety? I could be Stevie’s real mom! Honestly this book was so so good and I am ready for the next one.

Dramatic Mystery at its Finest!

This mystery had a touch of teen drama, but a heavy dose of “who-done-it” all throughout. The reason for four stars is that there was use of the F-word (2-3 times towards the end), and light description of a same-sex couple/nonbinary. I mention this for parents. Otherwise, the plot was excellent, the characters well-written, and the mystery continues!

Unfortunately this wasn't for me. In the beginning I really loved everything about this: I loved Stevie's character, I loved the dual timelines, I loved the insight we got into Stevie's live.
But quite soon stuff started to pile up I just didn't enjoy. First it was Stevie letting everyone use her and being a naïve/ extremely passive person, which was very annoying to read about. People kept almost walking over her and she was like "sure I'll help".
Then the love story started. Oh boyyyy... I generally don't enjoy love stories and this one wasn't an exception. It was also quite weird to read about how she just *had* to kiss him and oh how his jawline was so sharp, and his lean but muscular frame was so alluring.
Lastly I didn't like how nothing about the mystery was even somewhat resolved in this book: everything stayed open for the sequels and as a reader you literally get nothing.
