This was a very atmospheric and truly heartbreaking read. The pacing was a bit slow to get through to be honest, especially during the middle part. However, Ishiguro’s writing was very beautiful. The story was very character-driven, and I loved how everything was slowly revealed. The ending felt very realistic to me.

I think the main reason I enjoyed this book so much was because I had no idea what the premise was before reading it. I had heard the title before and, after coming across it in the library, picked it up and started reading. Because of this, I appreciated the little hints that the author wove into his novel and was ultimately surprised when everything came together in the end. I personally enjoyed the conversational feel of the writing style- it feels natural and friendly, and I liked that it seemed as if I was listening to Kathy give her narrative. Overall, I feel that this is a thoroughly developed, fascinating story that did not disappoint.

interesting concept, mostly boring story. i didn't find it as shocking as it felt like it was trying to be. very "man discovers empathy"

an extraordinary and insightful book that follows an intriguing storyline. Demonstrates not only heartwarming friendship, but also allows us to reflect on ourselves and on the modern world, especially when science and technology are developing at an ever increasing pace. It warns us to not lose morality and ethics among it all.

The style of writing is simple and straightforward as the narrator tells you about her life growing up, then as a medical care worker. It's a dystopia, yes, but the overall story feels not so much disturbing as it does mildly nostalgic and tinged with bittersweetness. It's well-written, and tells the story of an exploited clone girl growing up, managing her (complex and honestly, somewhat toxic) relationships, finding her place in the world, and how she faces the indeliable truth that her life was created solely for the purpose of serving others, be it as a donor or a care worker for the donors.

Moderate: Forced institutionalization
