suddenly i want to live in the pacific northwest. i want an impassable wilderness in my back garden right now.

i’ve managed to bully my best friend into moving to oregon or maybe northern california with me and he’s going to drive me around in a chevy whilst i cook very dodgy meals for him.

this book is making me feel a lot better about my life right now.

this all seems really weird as a review but i don’t know how to put into words what i feel about this book.

it’s really on my mind.

Couldn’t get into it.

I wanted to like this so much, being a huge Decemberists fan. Alas. It wasn't even a fiasco - that would have been more interesting. It was just mediocre. The book was so flat and charmless, so lacking in character development or a propulsive plot. I played a game toward the end where I covered up which character was saying something, and outside of a few verbal tics meant to serve as color it was sad how easily interchangeable they all were. From the man who gave us the Rake's Song and the Mariner's Revenge, I wanted something like a demented Lemony Snickett's coke-fueled fantasy with input from Tim Burton. What I got was blandness and unconnected plot turns. Very sad.

I wanted to read this book so bad when I was in 3rd grade. I’ve had a copy for SO LONG. I just couldn’t get past the first few chapters. But I wanted to so bad! So I finally set out to do just that! I FINISHED THIS BOOK! Seven-year-old Lilly is clapping and doing a little dance!
I was shocked out how advanced the vocabulary was for a novel targeted towards young readers. Great for SAT studying, but totally part of what hindered me a decade ago. The world building throughout is very fun to explore - a reason I love reading kid’s books. Parts of this lost my interest and it was a little dragged out. Glad to finally say I know how it ends!

Overall an entertaining book that has a lot of lot of imagination. However, there were certain pieces of the plot that were not well written...therefore only three stars.

thick guy not sure if magic as soon as I finished the book I forgot the entire thing at least the book paper was nice...

I got through about half of this book. When I realized I had sped up my reading to a near skim and kept checking to see how many (of the MANY) pages I had left to go, I decided that life is too short to force a book I'm not enjoying.

I would not compare this to Narnia - Meloy does not have the same charm and humor as Lewis. This may be a good book for elementary school readers, but for me, it didn't have the all-ages appeal that truly great children's fiction has. It wasn't terrible by any means, but I found it too light in clever and heavy on precious.

Great book - I know it's for kids but it's a kids book that treats them like smart creatures instead of beings who need to be protected for their own sake. Just the right mix of magic and fear and early teen awkwardness. I loved picturing all the animals with the human traits. This is one that I will enjoy reading with Finn when he gets older.
Very recommended (and I just noticed that it is the first in a trilogy - yay!)
