Overall, a lovely and whimsical story that deals with grief, in a lighthearted yet profound way. It did struggle to keep my attention at times but the overall story was enjoyable and relatable. Backman has such a gift for making typically unlikeable people as lovable characters. He merges reality and fairytale in a somewhat confusing but enjoyable story. This could be enjoyed by
It's a funny book in the perspective of an almost eight year old girl. Elsa just might be my favorite literary character.

This was my first encounter with Fredrik Backman's writing and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The perspective of the young girl made it a new and refreshing take on what reality can look like. The story was beautifully woven together in a way that made it clear that everything was meaningful while also pulling you forward to discover that meaning at every twist and turn. The characters were intricate and well developed and the style made it engaging. I would strongly suggest this to anyone interested in a character driven story with a little bit of mystery knit throughout.

I will admit I had a hard time getting into this book. At first the story line was confusing with the fairy-tell parallel, all the kingdoms and different names for things, left me more confused than I wanted to be. I was tempted to stop reading a few times, but I knew there was a great story hidden down deep that if I finished the book, I would discover. And there is...a story of life and grief. A story of a group of people of all different kinds learn to help each other with their heartaches and sorrows.
I would like to meet Granny, however I think I would have a love hate relationship with her just like Britt-Marie and Ulrika (Elsa's mom).

Having read and loved both A Man Called Öve and Britt-Marie Was Here, I really struggled with this. I found the fantasy element, along with Elsa’s dialogue (which felt greatly exaggerated), really awkward and slow to read.
The wider characters were fun to read about. I especially enjoyed the character development of the wider characters, as you feel yourself warm up to all of them by the end.
For anyone who struggled with this but hasn’t read another Backman, I would encourage you to read his others as they are much better in my opinion.
