An interesting detective story featuring 3 historians and a retired police officer. I enjoyed the intriguing style and the plot-twists throughout the book. Vargas beautifully describes her charactes and their obsessive, yet somehow hilarious habits. The story itself is also interesting. It starts with a suspicious tree appearing in the garden of a famous greek opera singer Sophia and continues with a series of mysterious killings and linkages.
What I didn't like: The beginning of the book might feel a bit boring or repetitive, so I was proceeding very slowly. But keep going, it may not be the best detective story, but it's quite good if you have read the most famous ones, and now looking for something new.

Charming mystery, very appealing characters. I was fairly surprised by the "who" of whodunit! But then I am someone who doesn't see the twist ending in about 50% of the twist ending type movies I see, so make of that what you will.
I'm giving it only 3.5 stars because it is pretty slow in parts. Still, the characters and the good story made it enjoyable nonetheless.

this book was great - the pacing suffered a little in the middle, and the whole fixation on alexandra being innocent with no real evidence annoyed me, but the ending and the characters really carried this and the end product was super satisfying.
plus, im glad i enjoyed it, since it was a recommendation from a friend who i hold on high regard.

- found family trope/characters who are visibly friends and explicitly shown to care for each other
- well-written female villain
- enough red herrings to keep you guessing who the murderer is until the very end
- beautifully written prose
This is now one of my new favorite books and I'm really excited to read more of Vargas' writing in the future!

I find murder mysteries easiest to read in French. The text tends to be logical, not open to interpretation or flights of fancy, metaphor it other lyrical devices. So translation is easier.
This was slow in the regard as Vargas is an expansive writer, bringing feeling to the narrative. And it works. I was transported to 90s Paris. Unfortunately, I've returned to the here and now

Kyllä täytyy taas kerran todeta, että Vargasin kirjailijaääni on todella persoonallinen. Herkullista sanailua ja mielenkiintoisia hahmoja. Pidin tästä, mutta tämän ensimmäisen osan perusteella Adamsberg-sarja on silti mielestäni Vargasin 'ykkönen' tähän Evankelistaan verrattuna.

"Debout les morts" est mon Vargas préféré. Du moins c'est ce que je dis chaque fois qu'on me pose la question. Et parce que je n'aime pas me tromper, parce que j'aime être sûre, je relis les Vargas en ce moment. Dans un ordre à peu près cohérent cette fois-ci.
"Debout les morts" me plaît d'abord par la galerie de personnages qu'il propose. Les évangélistes comme aime les appeler Vandoosler le vieux. Saint Marc, Saint Luc et Saint Matthieu, comprendre : Marc Vandoosler, Mathias Delamarre et Lucien Devernois. Trois historiens, chacun spécialisé dans une période, qui ont les pieds bien enfoncés dans la merde. Leurs mots. Les trois personnages, très différents, aux rythmes de vie censément irréconciliables vivent tous trois dans une vieille maison. Chacun son étage. Et dans les combles, il y a Vandoosler le vieux, le parrain et l'oncle de Marc, un ex-flic un peu ripou.
La disparition d'une voisine va amener les trois historiens et l'ex-flic à s'intéresser d'un peu plus près aux affaires du quartier, à travailler de concert pour s'assurer qu'Alexandra, la jolie nièce de la voisine disparue ne plonge pas pour le meurtre de sa tante. Parce qu'il y a eu meurtre, de cela Mathias est certain. Et il est assez facile de se laisser convaincre par Mathias. Marc s'inquiète surtout de l'arbre qui est apparu un matin dans le jardin de la voisine (Sophia, il était temps que je donne son prénom) et qui a mis en mouvement le drame.
Autre point pour lequel j'adore ce livre, c'est le style de l'auteur. Un style fluide où les pensées et la narration s’emmêlent étroitement. Vargas aime jouer avec la langue, les expressions. Elle associe les idées pour en faire jaillir des images fortes. Et c'est d'ailleurs ainsi que procèdent ses enquêteurs. Par association d'idées, des détails qui s'enfoncent dans leur inconscient et qui les poursuivent jusqu'à ce qu'ils parviennent à les caser dans le grand puzzle de l'enquête. Et Marc fonctionne ainsi : une idée qui le titille, un détail qui ne colle pas et il ne le lâchera pas tant qu'il ne l'aura pas bien interprété, tant qu'il ne lui aura pas redonner sa place.
Un bon bouquin bien écrit, avec des personnages solides qui manquent d'ordinaire et débordent de fantaisie, une enquête qui intrigue.
