very good book lived how it was written and definitely want to read the sequel

I don't think this particular genre is my cup of tea, though Hopkins and similar works are hugely popular. Will try to read a few more to do reader's advisory, but the content just depresses me.

I understand why people like it but I just didn't dig it. It's not the subject matter- the writing style bugged the crap out of me. And it's catching, there are a few books I chucked for this same offense

Written like a beat poem, and not a good one, like the ones Ani DiFranco writes - more like a teenager who's trying her hand at being a beat poet but just comes off as pretentious. This is not a book I would recommend to a teenager who may be considering trying drugs. Sure, Kristina has a rough go of things, but everything turns out okay for her in the end, so it couldn't have been all that bad, right? Ugh. There's no gravitas to the material, and there is no character arc. Kristina experiences some truly horrid things, yet they just roll off of her. Normally, this might be a sign of strength, but here it feels like nothing more than trivialization. I did not realize at first that this book was part of a series; it is a series that I will not be continuing.

It scares me to think that this is a YA book. It is even scarier to think such young kids could be addicted to drugs! :(

I don't really know how to rate this book tbh.
I loved the writing style, I mean writing a book is hard enough, but writing it in poetry form?! (Or, I guess, "free prose" as I've seen people in other reviews called it) - absolutely fantastic - 5 stars in that regard!
When I finished the last page, I felt as if I had just read a memoir as even though this is a fictional story, it's based on true events that happened in the author's family - and who am I to rate THAT??
I mean, this story was dark and powerful - much darker than I expected (sidenote: the 'monster' that is being referred to has nothing to do with fantasy :D).

"Crank, you see isn't any ordinary monster. It's like a giant octopus, weaving it's tentacles not just around you, but through you, squeezing not hard enough to kill you, but enough to keep you from reeling until you try to get away."

Crank by Ellen Hopkins.

Pros:

- Adored the writing
- Gives you a very interesting Insight to someone addicted to drugs
- Entertaining enough to keep the reader interesting in most cases

Cons:

- The tone of the story fealt kind of messy in a way
- Didn't enjoy any of our characters (except maybe Chase )
- Plot was kind of everywhere

Spoiler...

- Kristina get's addicted to Crank
- She actually get's pregnant from getting raped by someone she was "dating"
- She encounters a ton of horrible influences (Robyn, Her Father, All the guys she see's)

Quotes:

"Crank is more than a drug. It's a way of life. You can turn your back. But you can never really walk away. The monster will forever speak to me. And today, It's calling me out the door."

"But now nothing felt right nothing seemed proper but getting out, getting away, getting crazy, getting high."

Disclaimer:

I do not support substance abuse. I usually dislike reading about it. I did own this so I thought I would give it a read. I personally also wanted to read more of Ellen Hopkin's work.

i like they way the book is written b putting a poem on every page. It gets you interested and you'll want more when the book is over.

I’ve read this book before in high school. I wanted to revisit some of my past favorites. I love the way Ellen Hopkins writes her stories in poem form. This book, while heavy, is a very good read to see how people get addicted and the choice they make once they are.
