Thank God I missed out on reading this as a teenager or my journal would've been even more dramatic.
A quick and engaging read. I love that it's based on a true story (the author's daughter), as this always brings an air of authenticity to a story.
It was a dark, powerful look into a world I do not know--drug addiction. The split personality was an ingenious way to demonstrate the struggle going on inside of Kristina. The short poems were an effective format for this story.
I read this because my students were reading it. There's some more mature content in the book, though I understand the appeal. I've always loved reading as a way to experience things I never would in real life.

Well written and scarier than hell. This book ignited the well of repressed fear that many of us have but do our best to ignore -- the fear of our children lured into hell by seemingly fun and innocent recreational drugs. Thank God for writers such as Hopkins who are strong and brave enough to put the hell into words to warn young adults and adults of the horror.
I just listened to this entire audiobook almost in 1 sitting, with only a brief interruption to take a shower. The book is over 500 pages long, but because free verse format significantly shortens reading time, the recording is only 4.5 hours.
I definitely was not expecting to be as drawn in as I was, but Crank is incredibly engaging and although at first I was a little put off by the narrator's almost Valley-Girlish voice (despite being a born and bred Valley Girl myself), after a while I appreciated it. The narrator really sounded like a modern teen girl instead of an adult pretending to be a teenager.
And now, I am off to see if my library has Glass.

- I’m not sure what I’m looking for, but I know I’m not going to find it here.
- I’m just a girl caught in the middle of a war, and the enemy is me.
- Addiction is a monster with many faces, and I’m not sure I can defeat it.
- I thought I was a dreamer, but I was just a delusional girl trying to stay awake.
- The drug is a lie, a beautiful lie that feels more real than reality.
- I was a puppet, and my strings were made of crystal.
- It’s easier to fall than to rise, to surrender than to fight.

So I got back into my list of recommendations and started with Crank by Ellen Hopkins.
So I keep seeing books in real life and going "Oh. This audiobook should only be a couple hours!" and then it's like 19 hours long, and then other times I'm expecting it to be super long because the book is THICC, but then it's not.
Crank was not even 5 hours of audiobook

I felt like it was kind of an attempt at a modern "Go Ask Alice" tale.
Whoa. I just read this in one sitting, after being asked for Ellen Hopkins' books constantly, and I can see why they are so compelling. I now have a much higher standard for verse novels. SLJ says it best: "The poems are masterpieces of word, shape, and pacing, compelling readers on to the next chapter in Kristina's spiraling world. This is a topical page-turner and a stunning portrayal of a teen's loss of direction and realistically uncertain future."
When good girl Kristina tries crank (methamphetamine) on a visit to her absent father, she is instantly hooked and her life spins out of control. The end is unsettling and inconclusive; I've already reserved the sequel.
Mature language and themes.

This was a really interesting read. It is written in verse which bothered me at first but once I got into the story I started to like it. The story chronicles a teen girl's addiction to meth and moves pretty quickly.
