I’m about to have to rethink my stance on dark romances because this duopoly was just incredible. In this book we get to know Cole and Mara on a much deeper and more personal level, learning more about their pasts and what drives them to be the people we met in the first book. I just want to say that Mara is such a badass and I am obsessed with how much they care about each other and how it is very clear they are willing to do anything and everything for each other. Hell yeah. Also Mara was such a badass in this book even more than in book one and I am loving it.
Such an amazing series. I can’t say how much my jaw dropped at parts the spice throughout the series is perfect

Wasn't bringing me joy. I had issues with the 1st book and the writing style and I couldn't let them go enough to finish this.
3 stars because not a lot happened in this book. I think this, and the previous book, could’ve been condensed into one faster-paced book.
I did enjoy the portrayal of Cole as a psychopath though. Disclaimer: I have no psychology expertise, but Cole seems like a quintessential psychopath. He’s cunning, pretends to have whatever emotion he needs in the moment, but really only feels a select few. He forms strong attachments with a couple people. What I liked, was that he’s not unfeeling or only feels rage/anger. He feels very deeply on the few occasions that he has genuine emotions. He feels genuine happiness with Mara.
Speaking of Mara, she had the most character development in the story, though I’m surprised by some of it. Despite my earlier wish for condensing the book, I wish more on-page time had been dedicated to motivating Mara’s character changes.

Spoiler
In the first book and beginning of the second, she is very anti revenge violence. But, after apparently getting upset during sex, is totally cool with it? She watches one violent murder and suddenly has the stomach for it, to the point that she coolly murders Shaw?

I have never finished a book so fast! The emotional roller coaster these two MCs have unfurled for us in this book has me gripped since the beginning. Cole kind of redeemed himself in my eyes in this book compared to the first book where I thought he was a bit emotionless. I’m glad Mara found her niche when it came to her life and seeing her character being built into confidence had me smiling. Love the connection between Cole and Mara and the fact that Cole is such a simp for his girl.
