The absolute only compaint I had about this book stemmed from the fact it was an audiobook, nothing to do with the writing itself. It was the pronunciaton of "Arthur" which in the southern accent of the characters sounds like "Author" on nearly all occasions. This made it quite confusing to follow until I realized what was being said, about a third of the way through the book.
I appreciated all the attention being given to Bree's heritage, and her responses to the world as a result. As a young african-american MC there is generational trauma that I cannot even begin to fathom, and books help me to reach at least a limited understanding that I can apply to my own real life situations, and learn from it. It is important for people to be exposed to the faux-pas they may unwittingly do that minorities are so used to that they just dont tell us to stop anymore. We need to learn and books are a safe place for those needs to be expressed, and to call out readers who have toxic and inappropriate behavior. This book does fantastically with that. Despite Brees obvious exclusionary enviornment in the south, this novel is also amazing at showing diversity in other ways while still accentuating the horrible conditions people of color still face today. We have numerous queer representation sprinked through the book.
In all, this was a lovely book that I would reccomend to a pretty wide audience. Maybe 14 and older? Its certainly got enough going for it that older readers will enjoy this, even though it is centered around young teenaged characters.

YA, so there are some jumps you have to make, but the characters, relationship, and writing are superb. Lore is kinda funky but I’m looking forward to exploring more in Book 2

If I could give Legendborn all the stars in the sky, I would. I cannot express, without spoiling the entire novel, how culturally significant this book is. Gorgeously written, complex, and heart wrenching, Legendborn handles several connected and messy questions about legacy and heroism in a way that is accessible to those who may never thought about them before.

Taking on Arthruiana (stories of King Arthur and the Round Table) is no small feat in itself. Doing so in a mode that centers a Black girl's existence is monumental and so, so, so important. Tracy Deonn has made a place for Black women among the heroes of Arthurian legend without bowing to its inherent assumptions about who can and should be considered "legendary." At the same time that it reanimates the legend of King Arthur, Legendborn resonates with ideas and approaches visible in other Black Feminist work (e.g., N. K. Jemisin, Octavia Butler, M. NourbeSe Philip, Alexis Pauline Gumbs, Katherine McKittrick, Dionne Brand, Saidiya Hartman, etc.).

If you were a fan of Dark Horse's Once and Future Queen (which didn't get the run it deserved), Legendborn is for you. If you are looking for a fantasy novel that actively challenges and resists the inherent whiteness and racialism of "Tolkienist" fantasy and Western fantasy stories in general, I encourage you to read this book. If you're looking for something like T. H. White or Mists of Avalon, this book is not what you're looking for, but you should read it anyway.

Excellent second half. The first half is very info-dumpy and can be overwhelming. I still don't know who's squires or who's scions. But I very much knew and loved the more focal characters. Couldn't put it down after we got to ~60% mark and pace sped up after that. Made me cry more than once and I wasn't expecting it.
