I read this in high school, and was enthralled from the first sentence. I just reread it by listening to it on audible, and was skeptical that I would be drawn in again -- especially at first because it took so long to set up all the characters and events. However, the magic happened, of course. One thing that stood out in the audio version was the Bible verse that played on Sidney's mind, which was so pivotal in his sacrificial act and was very important to the mental state of the British at that time.

I enjoyed this book in high school. I'm happy to say I still enjoy it as an adult.

Dicken's writing is so clever and playful that I would probably enjoy the book without a good story behind it. ut the story and characters are pretty good, too. It looses a little bit toward the end. Archaic in some ways.

Loved it all.. not just the amazing ending, but every word. Even the superfluous ones.

This is a love-hate-kinda thing. I finished about 2/3 and I was thinking about giving this a mere two stars because to be honest: I didn't get the book AT ALL. And I was severely disappointed by this. I even looked it up just to make things easier. The language is old for my - too young - mind. To me it was like being presented with a big heap of yarn without beginning nor end with a lot of knots. It was a struggle but I'm glad I ploughed through because in the last 100th pages I finally got it. I got the characters, I got their backstories, I just ... got it. What is there left to say?

The insanity of it all! How inhumane can one be driven by neglect? Is it possible that the burden of forced poverty can drive people to madness and a cruelty that surpasses the rich aristocrats? If so ... I fear for our dear politicians here. They are circling back to old ways. And Guillotine is smiling violently towards them.

But above all. How strong love! How passionate life ... Oh, and that ending ... Heartbreaking.
