This book is set in Georgian London England and when the French Revolution was happening over in Paris France.

I would have to say that despite Dickens being born the century after the Georgian and French Revolution-era happened, he did a great job of writing this book. I have been a fan of Dickens' writing since studying A Christmas Carol back in Year 10/11 and this was the same. I loved the language Dickens portrayed in these characters and for some, I think he was (like A Christmas Carol) using some of the characters, especially in the final part of the book to mouth off his own experiences growing up pretty much poor. I also felt that the plot was going in one direction and kept with it, which made my predictions for the chapter and there were several moments that I went 'Aha the story has really begun now' as there was loads of character development and also moments that made me happy and sad. The downside for me with this book was that it was a very heavy book of literature and I kept on putting it down and then picking it up months later, which was fine as I got to enjoy the literature more, but I would've liked something that kept me reading.

Would recommend it to someone who loves classical books and also loves a heavy classic book of literature

This book took a while to get going. It took many uninterested days of reading to reach a part that captivated me. I'd recommend this book to anyone who is patient.

I tried to read this a couple times when I was younger, but never got far and Dickens felt like something I should read. This time, I listened to an excellent audio version. I loved it. There is some sappy stuff, but for the most part, I feel like the characters are well written and there is a lot of humor and irony in the story.

It’s been in my top 5 favorite books for 15 years.

sydney fucking carton

Hard to get into. Moving despite its flaws.

A difficult read, no doubt. I wondered through most of the book if I was even understanding what was happening. Yet, the last 80 pages brought all the stories together for me. I still don’t doubt that I did not capture all that happened in the difficult English writing, but I understood the genesis of it…a character barely mentioned through 2/3 of the book ends up being the hero of the story. Really good story of the doctor (jailed for 18 years) and the daughter that just happens to marry the son of one of the brothers that jailed the father. All told during the French Revolution.

Good book and good warm up for my winter Dickens binge. Never pass up Dickens.
