One of the most powerful things I’ve ever read. So so incredible.

I was very unsure what to review this, but after thinking on it for a bit I think 3 stars wrap up my thought well enough.

The first half of the book was pretty boring to me and I really considered DNFing. But since I had already invested both time and money into it, I continued. I also saw so many good reviews and ratings that made me feel like I was missing something. The second half of the book was much better. I was much more interested and the plot really progressed.

I think much of my issue with the book was a me thing, like not liking fake dating as a trope. But I also felt there were some very tropey moments and the main character read very YA at times. The mystery was decent and relatively complex, though I do think it could be predicted.

Overall, I enjoyed it. I would recommend it especially for the representation and as an own voices story. However, I do feel a little let down and it was a little overhyped.

That feeling when a book you’ve had on your shelf for 3 years is simply amazing!!!! This was the story of a tribal community which is facing a deep problem with drugs, particularly Meth. We follow our FMC Daunis who has never quite fitted in because her father never claimed her as his own (on the birth certificate) so she was not native by right. We then follow in a complicated story to seek justice for the deep rooted problems surrounding drugs and trafficking. I think that’s all you need to know and honestly you should all read this! I loved all of the traditional culture that was interwoven in and this faced lots of problems including racism, injustice and sexual crimes.

I went in completely blind, but this book grabbed me right from the start. It's got a lot of plot, and the main characters are wonderfully fleshed out. The writing is so full of heart, and there's a lot of empathy and kindness in the information that's given to those who might not be familiar with Ojibwe traditions. There are a lot of really difficult topics that I think are handled really well. There are a few minor points I could critique, Daunis is very "not like other girls" and by the end the "secret squirrel" joke had really run its course with me, and the "guy lies" felt juvenile, but that might be different for YA readers. Also a few of the side characters could have done with more fleshing out, mainly the mom and dad.
