One of the best thrillers I've read in a long time! For some reason, I expected a bit of fantasy elements from the cover and title, but, no, it's a darn good contemporary #ownvoices novel about a recent high school graduate trying to decide what to do with her life in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She was the hockey stud in her town and was supposed to go to U of Michigan to play, but her family is damaged--a grandmother is sick, her uncle recently died suspiciously, and the meth problem is running rampant in her Ojibwe community. I went to this area of Michigan when I was 13 and ignorantly don't remember seeing much about native people because I didn't pay attention to things back then. But this novel made me research--https://www.saulttribe.com/history-a-culture/sovereignty/7-history-a-culture/41-story-of-a-people%20Retrieved%2012-18-17 This book really is the perfect blend of culture and fascinating crime thriller. I was so intrigued that I had to finish the audiobook last night in the house instead of just listening in my car. Loved the inclusion of Ojibwe words, too, as well as the traditions that Daunis practiced with her family. Can't wait to read another book by this author!

The perspective of the girl wasn’t my cup of tea. Again, this probably says more about me than the book.
Wasn’t feeling the relationships and it felt a little too YA to me.

I realized I read the stand-alone sequel first, but it still made sense and it was wonderful to reflect on the characters who were in “Warrior Girl Unearthed” in this novel. This story was very moving and listening to Daunis’s story was a gift. I definitely recommend this one as well, but maybe read this one before the other one lol
