don't cry because it happened, smile because it's over
- this book had so much potential but i feel like the only thing the writer got right was the setting!!! here are my main issues:
1. mc is 18 years old but narrates the story like a child (which it's especially bad if you consider some of the topics the book touches on)
2. the scenes were so repetitive?? i lost count of how many times she went on a morning run and visited her grandma (it was like reading the exact same scene over and over without getting any new info)
3. the secondary characters were extremely inconsistent and shallow! not only would they completely change their behavior after one sentence but the the only personality trait of the mc's mom was being sad
4. very predictable (and that's coming from someone who never reads thrillers)
5. not only she is not like other girls, she literally degrades the "other girls"
6. idk if this makes sense but while the mc had relationships with everyone in the community, it seemed like the members of the community didn't have relationships with each other? like the brother of the mc never even mentions their aunt (who is very much an important character)
i was super excited about this book and especially wanted to see how the mc dealt with and balanced the two sides of her family, but unfortunately the poor execution made me so mad that it was impossible to focus on that

This book was beautiful. I felt so immersed and eager to learn about Daunis’s culture. Her war with identity is something I especially resonated with as a fellow mixed kid (although I am not Native). Boulley connects every event naturally and brings attention to the very real disproportionate violence against Native women. On a more superficial note, I love how easily the writing could shift from romantic to full on thriller without missing a beat. All in all, I could not put this book down. The characters were complex and lovable, and the plot made me hungrier and hungrier for the answer. I could not have asked for a better book to be my first read of 2022.

I liked this book. But it was terribly slow and I truly believe the author could have cut the text in half and still have written a great story. I enjoyed learning more about Native traditions and was heartbroken learning more about their unique struggles and injustices.
It frontloads a lot of exposition about the characters and theire relationships that was kind of dense and awkward for me but it really picks up after that. I also didnt love the will-they-wont-they stuff because it doesnt get interesting until about halfway through and it kida drags getting there. Very good overall!
